Not well known in general, but a congress woman who got re-elected in November in the face of the Tea Party crowd and a lot of violent rhetoric, including being on Palin's "Target list" on a map painted with crosshairs over her district. So the undercurrent behind all the condemnations and lamentations is that everyone's waiting to find out whether the shooter was politically motivated or just nuts (I'd bet money on it being a hefty chunk of both).

Latest updates are that there are 10 being treated, 1 dead (a child), and Giffords is out of surgery and responsive, Shooter is alive and in custody, police have arrested a second man who may have been involved and are looking for a third.

The shooter's MySpace page was pulled down but his youtube account is still accessible, and opens with a picture of an American flag with someone singing "Let the bodies hit the floor"... http://www.youtube.com/user/Classitup10 ... L1lsLU-kUw

Someone with issues does not need a excuse. It is clear this guy is off the map from just spending five minutes on his youtube channel. He'd not need a reason. It is those around him who need looking into? Was someone aware of the risk posed and did not notify the authorities? There are lessons to be learnt - most invlolve common sense. People should do the right thing and raise concerns where there is a significant departure from 'normal' which involves a interest/knowledge of weapons. If someone is feeding this guy rubbish they are partly culpable? or if there is someone pushing him in a certain direction? Does he have any handlers? or quasi-handlers?

Watched a little of his stuff on youtube - looks like the guy just had some wierd conspiracy theories on currency and mind control through grammar...

He also mentions something about "not trusting God", so brace yourselves for accusations that atheism caused the shooting.
