I don't BELIEVE this guy!
Diaspora Alpha, the open-source "we are not Facebook" new social network gives the users a text field labeled "gender" instead of radio buttons or drop-down menus with predefined choices. The guy who designed this feature wrote a thoughtful blog post about why this is a Good Thing.

Enter "affamato", who upon joining gets very, very disappointed about this, so he suggests a
twomulti-choice "sex" label, because it is more "objective"

And when nobody likes his idea much, he feels compelled to even BLOG about it

Edit: OK, he did "allow" more than two choices...

Why does he care so much?
Libertarianism: The belief that out of all the terrible things governments can do, helping people is the absolute worst.

OK, I'm trying out how I feel with "androgynous bi-woman". First realization: I am actually very much unused to being ABLE to be honest about my gender identity (that the technology allows it and the platform/community welcomes it). I think I will come to like a lot being free from oversimplified labels.

You can be anything that you can type (until some character set or string length limit, I suppose).
One young woman has "Ada Lovelace" as her gender. Cool!
Double-take: why would you want to be an epsilon?

(Brave New World did come into my mind fast, despite the obvious joke) But hey, if it works for you...

So I could put 'applecart' as my gender?

Of course. Re-read if needed:
anything you can type.

I won't ever use it, of course, but still, fairly lol.
