I've noticed it's still radio silence in the cosmos? Must be something eating detectable inteligent lifeforms out there? Whatever they are doing the eating their probably drawn to microwave transmissions or something?

Oh they are out there alright, but they are afraid to come near us in case they catch what the human race has got!

The milky way has something like 300 billion stars. If there was only one other inhabited planet, it could be on the other side. No radio waves can get through the centre. And if they could, it would take 50,000 yrs for them to arrive.
So I advise patience.

I heard the following analogy for the likelihood of two civilizations with technology being within a short enough distance and at the same time to communicate with each other.

One day you put on a blind fold and fly over the Sahara desert, randomly changing your direction, speed etc. After an undetermined period of time, you drop a matchstick out of the plane.

A few weeks later you do the same thing.

The chances that the matchsticks have landed in such a way as they have crossed is about the same chance as an alien civilization existing within our reach at this point in time.
It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.

Maybe the aliens don't listen to the radio. Perhaps they prefer teevee?

If the aliens existed for any length of time their Gorgon Stares must be advanced enough to utilise all means to scan for intelligent life such as ours. Also given enough headstart time on us and assuming that just one civlization(out of billions?) overcomes restraints on star to star colonisation then they'd be able to colonise everywhere in a few hundred thousand years, no more than a million, and have a outpost of somekind here(perhaps in the Kuiper belt?). These two match sticks are not the same. Theirs is going to be much larger and stringed out with sensors whilst ours is just a standard matchstick. Either they don't want to be discovered or their not around, perhaps dead even, and we're alone?

They're out there by Mars looking at us and saying "I so do not want to get sucked into the drama!"
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Our development and widespread use of radio technology has only a very brief history in terms of civilization, much less in cosmological time scales. Radio is already losing out to cable and fibre-optics. If alien civilizations go through a similarly brief time of radio-dominant communications technology, we'd have to be incredibly lucky to be listening in at just the right time.

Unless they have wireless routers. Then we could spam them mercilessly until they get pissed off enough to write back. :ele:

It seems entirely plausible to me (since I don't really know what I'm talking about and I'm just making this up) that there's loads of galactic space-chat going on, via the much more convenient neutrino-wave-radio, which we haven't learnt how to detect yet.

Or, it could just be that alien life isn't that advanced.

Who's to say alien life had a head start at all?

Speculation on non-data. Stop farting please.

Whatever the communication tech, we'd have to be looking for it with just the right equipment at just the right time in just the right location. When you think about it, the odds of detecting intelligent communications seem pretty damn slim. But I'm not an expert on it...Still, it's fun trying, eh? And if you don't play, you can't win... Like that...
