in that case no need to spend £13 million :funny:

probably find that half the money goes on Admin of the scheme, half of what left on books for folk who don't need them (but happy to take a freebie). the rest probably eat them. to be blunt, if a parent doesn't have the wit to realise the importance of something as basic as reading for a child (and can't lay hands on any books themselves) then the kid is fooked anyway .....give them a free book that won't be read is a waste of time and money - unless you are part of the admin running the scheme, then it's a jolly good idea.

something like this is an ideal thing to cut :smoke: as could be replaced by the voluntrary sector, if folk were truly that bothered enough to get off there arses. UK not got a s/h book shortage. probably more books go into landfill every year than were handed out......

Capaitlaism is great at getting the price right on a pint of milk. I wouldn't trust it with books since very few would have anything beyond naked ladies in unusual exotic poses if I did.

Capitalism won't teach yer kids to read. nor will socialism. but capitalism will provide more of the money needed to spend on the resources that will help. but money and wishful thinking alone is not a solution.

it's an irony that socialist type people ascribe a magic to money that even capitalists don't. :fp:

I'm a pragmatist. Whatever gets the job done. I'm not a idealist and I don't mind smudging systems together to weed out weakness and trace strengths. This Cameron is a idealist. In a ideal world poor kids would be given books by educated but poor parents, or kindly benefactors living the Big Scoiety dream. In a ideal world we all get a second chance. In the real world these books may be the only gift of the written word some kids are ever likely to recieve - free and without some obligation. I'm not a idealist but some people born into wealth and privelege take their 'gift culture' as a given far more stridently than a communist ever would. They imagine it should work for all since it works so well for them but 'money' when it comes down to it ain't being given away free by them is it? That's a pump for hyper-inflation as both top and bottom dodge the bullets of a rotten deal by biting deeper into their combined rotten apple of opposing absurd idealogies - something for another thread?

There are wonderful intitutions called libraries if people want books without paying for them. Pointless charity is pointless, they were quite right to bin it
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Not strictly true.. The are giving local councils so little money that they are going to have to make decisions about which things are more important - roads, schools, libraries etc.. bastards.

I can see libraries being run by volunteers in the next year or two.

They don't simply stock books but are imformation hubs for the most disadvantaged these days with full internet access DVDs and CDs on loan for a small sum. I think books have been playing second fiddle for a while now with libraries - many are worn out and the new ones are really just above the acceptable standard. A different issue but I recall when a library was a library and the books a real treasure. Now the shelves are better but the books have suffered as a result of poor management and ignorant staff who choose books without vision.
