Ain't fair...I was reading that....ignorance is strength wasn't a presecription you know?

Leading writers have condemned a government decision to withdraw funding from a charity that provides free books to children to encourage reading.

Booktrust will lose its £13m support for schemes in England from April.

Author Philip Pullman called it an "unforgiveable disgrace", and ex-poet laureate Sir Andrew Motion said it was an "act of gross cultural vandalism".

Stupid decision, and bad spin management for the Tories; it is a complete no-brainer to link this move to Conservative fears of a more effectively educated working class...

'Tough choices' to quote Cameron. I sympathise and also think it is a bad decision, but on the other hand I have rather a lot of sympathy for the 300,000 local government workers who are going to be out of a job in the coming weeks.

Bad call, but if Cameron was serious about getting control of the UK's spending, then I would first recomend not bailing out any major banking institutions and just them pay the price for their mistakes.

The trouble is that would mean bad debts all round, business going under, bankruptcies everywhere and the potential meltdown of parts of the economy. They have us by the short and curlies I am afraid.

If I hear "tough choices" one more time, I will vomit. It's ideology, pure and simple.

Would it not be true that circumstances have forced the need to reduce public expenditure, at least by a certain amount?

The conservative ideology may well be apparent in the savagery of the cuts, and where they are directed...

This is to reduce the burden of debt for the next generation or something? sorry I can't read the small print. :ab:

The Tories can use their "tough choices" catch-phrase to cover everything they want to do. They still managed to spend £2 billion on consultants last year. The £13 million spent on this book scheme is peanuts, especially when you consider the potential multiplier effects of encouraging reading.

It means the books don't have to be bought or purchased in order to be used.

My girls both got these free book packs through the Health Visitor at regular developmental reviews, for us it was just a drop in the ocean, one free book to add to many we'd bought from shops or charity shops despite being skint because we saw them as neccessary, but there'll be plenty of kids out there who have very few books and whose parents may otherwise not buy or read books.
Men! They're all beasts!
Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

in that case no need to spend £13 million :funny:

probably find that half the money goes on Admin of the scheme, half of what left on books for folk who don't need them (but happy to take a freebie). the rest probably eat them. to be blunt, if a parent doesn't have the wit to realise the importance of something as basic as reading for a child (and can't lay hands on any books themselves) then the kid is fooked anyway .....give them a free book that won't be read is a waste of time and money - unless you are part of the admin running the scheme, then it's a jolly good idea.

something like this is an ideal thing to cut :smoke: as could be replaced by the voluntrary sector, if folk were truly that bothered enough to get off there arses. UK not got a s/h book shortage. probably more books go into landfill every year than were handed out......

gotta remember that the Teletubbies were invented under Labour. Using English was seen as racist.
