Wow. I think I'll pass on the earthquake experience. Give me typhoons and hurricanes anyday. Maybe a tsunami, even. But the prospect of a building collapsing on me...I'll pass on that one.

Living in DC, I'm not very likely to get earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, etc. Even major snowstorms are kinda few and far between. Somehow, I worry about WMD attacks more. The other day I looked up what would happen if somebody detonated a ground-level suitcase nuke in downtown DC while I was sitting at my desk. At 4.6 miles away, I should be OK.

You should have been in Mississippi for Hurricane Katrina - destruction from the Gulf Port almost to Tupelo. It scared me more than Camille because I was more aware of what could happen.

I do remember Hurricane Camille. I was six and I remember my parents were running around packing up stuff so we could go stay with my grandmother who lived near the Jackson Zoo - at the time we lived in a trailer in South Jackson. There was a lot of rain and howling wind and the next day, a lot of tree limbs on the ground.

*cough* Thanks for reminding me... :? Know where I can get a good gas mask? Iodine tablets? Lead-lined undies, perhaps? (Huxley promised the latter, but I'm still waiting...)

I've got friends who still live there and went through Katrina. My best friend tried to describe it, but gave up. He said, 'You just had to be there.'

I was around the same age in Leake Co. at the time. Same thing, living in a trailer, hurriedly packing stuff to go stay at the grandparents' brick house! I guess in those days, grandparents had more sense than to live in tornado-magnets. And yeah, trees and stuff scattered all around the next day. What a storm.

Meh. The last one I've lived through that concerned me was Northridge, which was... err.. slightly dramatic. :?

An unusual effect of the Northridge earthquake was an outbreak of Valley Girl Fever :funny:

Sure it wasn't 2002? Because if so I think I felt that one in Salford.

In Austria (especially the eastern part, where I live), we get the distinctly feelable, though harmless, occasional quake at intervals of a few years.

I think that would be rather enjoyable. The occasional cheap thrill without the fear of having buildings fall on you. Cool. :td:
