Er.....no. The depiction of it can also be harmful, especially if its used as a threat to blackmail the child into further sexual acts.

As to illustrations, they are apparently illegal in the state of Florida, which is why this book is illegal and Lolita is not.

I used to sell the implements...one would think I would know the acronym...funny how my interests seem to have changed...

Isn't it funny that we live in a world where the penalty for looking at a childs' genitals are often less than the penalty for cutting bits of them off?

It seems a calculated ruse to have someone arrested because their worldview is extremely taboo. This book is within the law, protected as free expression, in numerous places. People had to go out of their way to lure the author into breaking a particular law to have him done…

As others have already pointed out, there are numerous types of things abusive to children that are depicted in images, and sometimes openly advocated by some despicable characters who are also protected by free expression, and sometimes less justifiably so than this author - for those things are sometimes unequivocally abusive per se, whereas I have never been fully convinced that sexual activities between adults and minors must necessarily be abusive per se - as opposed to posing a very significant RISK of abusiveness, and a risk that at least in theory might not be realised.

I personally think it partly boils down to lingering taboo about sex as something intrinsically sordid and dirty and shocking. We've mostly rid ourselves of the taboo with respect to consenting adults - but more delicate minds and bodies must be protected from it at all costs.

How backwards is it that some would feel completely equanamous about cutting a boy's foreskin off, while going into apoplectic rage at the thought of someone fondling the same child's penis? That people can see real-life images of both male and genital mutilation, and other violent horrors perpetrated on minors, but not anything remotely sexual involving children? That a fairly benign and gentle paedophile is branded a child-abuser, while the mohel is tolerated with hardly a batted eyelid?

Lolita doesn't have pictures of the sex scenes. According to the report I read on CNN, this book contains illustrations of boys between the ages of approx. 9 and 13.
Ah. I understand there were some problems in this regard when filming the first movie.

But, illustrations?

Plus, Lolita doesn't advocate or defend paedophelia... it's an excellent novel that puts you inside the mind of a sex offender.
I listened to it as an audio book. But that was a number of years ago and my memory may be faulty.

I am the conscientious type and did a lot of reading prior to my son being born so I could do a perfect job as a parent :sighsm: .

I encountered something during that reading that would never have occurred to me otherwise, genital stimulation of infants to pacify and quiet them. It makes sense, although I would never have engaged in it because I have been adequately indoctrinated to consider it a perverse horror.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_masturbation
As late as the seventeenth century in Europe masturbation was commonly employed by nannies to put their young male charges to sleep.[11] That tolerance was soon to change.

http://www.ipce.info/booksreborn/martin ... ality.html
In societies that take a tolerant and permissive attitude toward erotic expression in infancy, fingering the genitals becomes an established habit of occasional occurrence. (Ford and Beach, 1951, p. 188). One of any number of examples that can be given is that of the Marquesa. Sex play was common practice from the earliest ages among the Marquesa and not only tolerated but encouraged. (Kardiner, 1939, p. 205-206). They recognized the erotic impulse in childhood and accorded it the right of free exercise. They eroticized the child by masturbating it to keep it quiet. In the case of the girls, labia were manipulated as a placebo, but also to encourage the growth of large labia, which to the Marquesans was a mark of beauty. Such activity was, no doubt, also erotically stimulating. There was social recognition of all sexual activity in childhood, and there were no restrictions against encouragement to exercise it freely; it was allocated the same place in the child's world that it occupied in the adult's.

Among the Kazak, adults who are playing with small children, especially boys, excite the young one's genitals by rubbing and playing with them.

Among the Balinese, play and teasing with the genitals is common. A mother will pat her baby girl on the vulva and exclaim, "Pretty! Pretty!" (Bateson and Mead, 1942, p. 26, 32, 131). A boy's penis will be stroked and rubbed. After he has urinated, he will be dried by a flick of his penis. As he grows older, his penis will be pulled and stretched and ruffled, and he will often attempt to keep his balance when learning to walk by holding on to it. Babies are comforted and quieted by manipulating their genital organs. In fact, in Bali, a baby, especially a baby's genital, is a toy with which to play. There is much delight taken in stimulating and playing with the baby to watch him respond.
So it is not a general taboo to avoid all sexual contact with children.

I think, that if the practice, as described in the examples above, was common and accepted, the infants so soothed would not develop mental or emotional pathologies as result. Caveat: The soothing of infants is worlds away from exploitation of them, children, teens or other adults for one's own gratification. And even infants soothed by genital stimulation, in a culture where the practice is the norm, would be traumatized by being abused later.

Given the above I would simply reiterate what I've already contested: sexual activity is never abusive purely in and of itself - but is made abusive by other factors - coercion and physical violence being the most obvious. These are the same things that make the activity abusive irrespective of the age, gender, species or anything else of the victim. Children are more vulnerable to abusive sexual activity - particularly at the hands of adults, and in our culture it may be the case that the majority of those that do flout prevailing cultural taboo are abusive - but this still does not make such activity abusive per se.
Then they for sudden joy did weep,
And I for sorrow sung,
That such a king should play bo-peep,
And go the fools among.
Prithee, nuncle, keep a schoolmaster that can teach
thy fool to lie: I would fain learn to lie.

@Gallatones - There's an account in the book "Don't Sleep There Are Snakes" of very similar behaviour by the Piraha people. In their culture it's obviously not abusive at all and equates to the way we might cuddle a child or kiss whichever part of them they've just hurt. I'd recommend reading the book because it also contains an account of the author (then a missionary) losing his faith due to exposure to the Piraha's worldview.
