None of the girls from the grammar school in our town were even remotely competent in Geography - I always thought it was crap teaching.

I was speaking with one at some point and she didn't know the difference between Antarctica and the Atlantic.

I used to spend a lot of time in Thailand (no shit ).

Locals generally not big on maps. even of own Country Initially thought it was just ignorance, but realised that it was because it genuinely didn't matter to most of them. If you ain't ever going to Chad, and your country doesn't own it - then does it really matter that it's in Africa? or matter that it exists at all America / Europe, much the same - not ever going to drive there. and exactly where idiot Westerners come from doesn't really matter to most. Hell, my TV probably comes from China - ok, I can find China on a map, but don't feel the need to learn the region it hails from. and it might come Korea - should it matter to me?

Historically maps were important to the Brits to show how good (big=good) the British Empire was. a couple of world wars also made maps more relevent to us. nowadays?

There is value in basic knowledge of one's surroundings, world events and world history. If all we were concerned about was what we "needed" to survive, then there wouldn't be much the average person would need to know. It's as important to know roughly where Chad is as it is to know that the world is an oblate spheroid and not a flat plane with cliffs on the edges and crystal domes above our heads.

No offence Rum, but how did she get to be 21 before you picked up on this? Whatever the failings in our academic system, shouldn't we be filling our kids with as much knowledge as we are able to offer them?

My lovely, though pig ignorant daughter is 21. She has huge redeeming features I sincerely add!

I have a son of 28 also, who won a scholarship to Balliol college Oxford (one of the top five there) after getting four A levels in one year, is a currently joint director of a communications company and is studying to be a barrister in his spare time.
