Let us think the unthinkable, let us do the undoable, let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

Of course they're useful, but some are plain stupid and cause unnecessary division.
The thing is, the Muslims who don't practise and preach hatred of the infidel are by definition not very good Muslims according to the Qur'an. They have cherry-picked bits of the book to suit themselves, much as the moderate Christian picks bits from the Bible to suite they way they want to live, and avoids the requisite unpleasantness demanded by their equally vile tome.

It's not that there are more Muslim terrorists. It's just that they are genetically predisposed to spontaneous combustion.

Agreed. And those moderate mulsims and moderate christians are not usually going to do nasty things to others in the name of their religion, and, like Chuck, one could have an amiable converstaion with them. All good...

However, lurking in the background is a lie, or at least an evasion. Virtually all christians, and all muslims, would refer to their book as holy and inspirational. And yet a cool and detached reading of either finds an ethical morass of violent tribalism. "Interpreting" the words in effect means discarding the bits which a civilised, non-religious enlightenment hsa moved beyond...

Really, seriously! I know you live on the other side of the planet but where does that comment come from? They are all funking lunatics who are willing to kill or die for a fucking fairy tale. At best they want to save you from hell by trying to infect you with their nuttyness. You need to do more research into the 'gin' and say goodbye to the ashes.
ALL of them? Wow, and I though I was totally anti-theist. There are ones that aren't as far gone as you say, though admittedly they are the ones who don't interpret their chosen evil book in its fullest way.
Most people don't "choose" their religious books. /pedantry
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
