It is genetically unwise to interbreed. In the absence of a theory of genetics they thought that they were being punished by god when they had deformed children. Actually, inbreeding is a good thing, it reveals recessives that can be culled out. Not pretty, but effective.

If you cull fair enough but if you don't you end up with lots of fuck ups around the place draining your tribe's resources. Even if you do cull breeding humans takes a lot longer than breeding livestock and the ones you have to cull have a negative effect on population growth

Interbreeding and incest is not quite the same thing. Incest is constrained to having sexual intercourse with the "prohibited classes" of family members. Interbreeding would be producing offspring of such sexual intercourse. "Prohibited classes" over here in SA would be parents, children, siblings, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts. It's governed by what's called the third degree of seperation. Anything in and beyond the third degree of seperation is considered not to be incest. And what do the white Afrikaners of SA have to show for this (as well as the forced inbreeding due to the apartheid policies)? A genetic predisposition to high cholesterol; and the resultant high mortality rate due to heart failure.

Lots of things are illegal, that we, at least based on the response from many here, would all agree should not be crimes.

In this case, though, it's clear that we don't all agree that incest should be legal, since mistermack clearly disagrees.

Not in some states, since sodomy is illegal.

Legal in Iceland for one generation. It was fairly common, if not talked about, back in the day for the daughter of a widower to become "wife" to her father, essentially a formalising of the Electra complex. Families that split apart and are reunited after a long period have the highest examples of consensual incest, there seems to be some kind of psychological effect going on.

But yeah, the thought of it pretty much makes my skin crawl.
