The Next Masters of the World

Post by Clinton Huxley » Fri Dec 10, 2010 10:11 am

The Pax Britannia is long over. The Pax Americana is waning. If there must be an "indispensable nation", deciding upon world affairs, who should be next? China? India? Luxembourg?

Me, I say India. They play Test Cricket and like a cup of tea.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

Australia.

No matter where you are or who's in power, it will be precisely the same as before.

Deffo NOT China. More than a billion of their 1.3 billion people live on less than $2k per year. Only a tiny percent (a veneer, some might say) lives on First World-level wages, and the great majority is still a vastly-impoverished Third World country. Moreover, the wealth in concentrated along the coast and heavily tied to foreign, not domestic, commerce. Moreover, their finance system is artificially skewed by Beijing. Moreover, their banking/credit system looks like 1980s-era Japan on steroids: tons of low-interest, cheap money, based more on personal connections than sound business investments. A roaring engine producing more heat than movement. And the logic of perpetual economic growth defies all of history: no country grows uninterrupted for decades without dealing with some serious problems at the end of it. There are some severe structural limits to their growth, and China is approaching them, and they're going to be hurting badly as they hit them.

But don't discount Iceland. Poised to conquer the world, I tell ya. :smug:

You can tell it's an old pic. There's uneaten pine needles and bark left on the trees.

It's tempting to laugh at that, if it weren't tragically true!

I think you are all overlooking Vanuatu. A country so obscure it doesn't even need armed forces, simply relying on the fact that no-one can find it on a map in any case!

You wait until Vanuatu develops electric can-openers and petrol powered lawn-mowers! The rest of you won't have a clue what hit you! :tea:

The US will never allow that to happen. We've got big plans for Vanuatu...
