According to their annual report, in 2009 World Vision UK had an income of £58 million and spent it this way:

£2.3 million on Water and Sanitation
£2.9 million on HIV and AIDS
£1.7 million on Advocacy
£14.5 million on Agriculture
£4 million on Economic Development
£4 million on Emergency Response
£2.9 million on Food Security
£5.8 million on Health
£8.7 million on Education
£1.7 million on Leadership Development
£9.3 million on Other Sectors (Consists of 14 other sectors none of which is more than 2% of total expenditure,
such as disability and disaster mitigation.)

The cost of generating funds through advertising etc was approximately £10.2 million and governance costs were £250,000.

There are a number of reasons why it is a bad idea to contact a child or his family directly. Firstly, it is made clear that a child is the "face" of his community. Yes, I sponsor a child, but I know that he doesn't receive my whole donation every month - it is for the good of all his family, friends and wider community. Secondly, the sponsor lives in unimaginable wealth compared to the child and his family - if the child I sponsor receives £xx a month from me he will probably never need to work again or at least make him unfairly "wealthy" compared to the other less fortunate children around him. This will lead to tension and problems within a community, and a mad scramble to get sponsorship. Thirdly, there are a lot of unscrupulous, horrible people in the world - private access to children, to shower gifts and money on them and their families...well, you know the rest.

Keep your fucking DD going Deersbee. World Vision haven't lied to you or anyone. Although you are ostensibly "sponsoring a child", a very clever tactic which provides a human individual on which to focus your charity, your money is being used much, much more productively by helping to support an entire community - it may be the only help they are getting, so please don't listen to all the bullshit here and keep your donations going.

OK, Devogue is right, it is not like they underdeliver on their promises or misuse the funds! Even if I obtain a direct contact, what shall I do with it: inconvenience the girl's family to open a foreign currency account, very likely they have no such possibility, get them in a situation where my donation has to be taxed as income, and myself pay half the amount of the donation on bank transfer charges for the international transfers every month?! I'll keep it going through Wolrd Vision and hope the girl obtains sufficient education to outgrow and overthrow the religious indoctrination by herself.

I've just been told I'd be getting an extra bonus this Christmas, so I'm planning to make a small contribution to Unicef's fight against female genital mutilation, Unicef is provenly secular.

Stop all this charity, it is cruel. The poor people in those poor countries will just reproduce and add to the mass of misery you will have to support 20 year later. Send them experts to show them how to dig wells and make latrines.
