I have only recently discovered Steve Vie....wow! I have to admit I am in two minds about him though. He is hugely technically proficient - and a real musician, but he has a slight cheese element to his stuff. Still - amazing guitar!

Edit:- Changed the piece. This is fucking genius.

Did you hear the story of how he got a job in Zappa's band?

He listened to live recordings and transcribed several of Zappa's solos. He then sent a few to Frank, asking if he could work for him as an official transcriber. Frank was keen on the idea and arranged a meeting. At some point, Steve mentioned that he also played guitar a bit... you can guess the rest!

There's a Mojo Mag special on Frank Z and this story is in it. That's how I have discovered Vie outside of Zappa's 'sphere'. I have to tell you that big softy that I am I have had tears streaming down my face listening to the huge talent this guys has since I discovered him just a few days ago. A tribute to sheer talent.

He did an album called Alive in an Ultra World. You should get that.

By the way, Rum, his name is Steve Vai, Vie. Just saying. :shifty:

I think I've got all of his solo albums. Most of them are pretty similar but all have at least a couple of stand out tracks. Flex-able (his first album) is probably the most atypical and probably my favourite.

You might like this - his tribute to Zappa.

This is one of my favourite Vai performances:

XC, nice tribute

Zappa. Wish I had that version on CD. Yes, I believe in CDs! CDs are real, mp3s are not!
