I love all this faith in the performance of Western weaponry....."Yeah, we can just get a drone to blow up that enrichment plant, seal up that one in it's mountain with this super-bomb".
If only the real world would co-operate...

IF you can see it and IF you can get weaponry in place and IF it works and IF its not raining too much and IF you can political agreement on the necessity and IF your intelligence is correct and IF the arms company hasn't sold you a pup and IF (ad nauseum) you MAY knock out a facility, for probably a shorter time than you hoped for, with probably enormous civilian casualties AND help to radicalise a country with a population, at least among the "yoof" that is not at the moment as ill-disposed to the West as some of its neighbours...Gawdzilla wrote:If you can see it, you can kill it.Clinton Huxley wrote:I love all this faith in the performance of Western weaponry....."Yeah, we can just get a drone to blow up that enrichment plant, seal up that one in it's mountain with this super-bomb".

The difference between movies and real life is that it's never that easy.Clinton Huxley wrote:IF you can see it and IF you can get weaponry in place and IF it works and IF its not raining too much and IF you can political agreement on the necessity and IF your intelligence is correct and IF the arms company hasn't sold you a pup and IF (ad nauseum) you MAY knock out a facility, for probably a shorter time than you hoped for, with probably enormous civilian casualties AND help to radicalise a country with a population, at least among the "yoof" that is not at the moment as ill-disposed to the West as some of its neighbours...Gawdzilla wrote:If you can see it, you can kill it.Clinton Huxley wrote:I love all this faith in the performance of Western weaponry....."Yeah, we can just get a drone to blow up that enrichment plant, seal up that one in it's mountain with this super-bomb".

Re: Should the 'west' make a pre-emptive strike in Iran?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/29/world ... ss&emc=rssSecret American intelligence assessments have concluded that Iran has obtained a cache of advanced missiles, based on a Russian design, that are much more powerful than anything Washington has publicly conceded that Tehran has in its arsenal, diplomatic cables show.
Iran obtained 19 of the missiles from North Korea, according to a cable dated Feb. 24 of this year. The cable is a detailed, highly classified account of a meeting between top Russian officials and an American delegation led by Vann H. Van Diepen, an official with the State Department’s nonproliferation division who, as a national intelligence officer several years ago, played a crucial role in the 2007 assessment of Iran’s nuclear capacity.

Re: Should the 'west' make a pre-emptive strike in Iran?
Well, here's one to ponder:
North Korea has already popped off a couple of nuclear bombs and have been jumping up and down trying to get attention for it. They have ballistic missles. They're just a few years away from combining the two, assuming they haven't already managed to do so covertly. A NK with weaponized nukes...just imagine. Iran is nothing compared to what that will be like. So...given the likely consequences of a nuclear-capable Kim, does a blanket prohibition on pre-emptive strikes sound so wise now? I'm up for it.

Lets have a pre-emptive strike against Pakistans's nukes too. I'm not convinced they've got those under proper lock and key.

Yes we should start pre-emptive strikes on every body who is out of favour with the West this week ,If it all fucks up we can arm them again if we need them to attack their neighbours . After all we in the west do have an absolute moral authority to mess with any country we like .

Asian defence spending has now risen above European defence spending for the first time since people started keeping records, so we could expect a few pre-emptive strikes coming our way...

Yeah, but an hour later and you'll have to do it again.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that "out of favor" be the test.Feck wrote:Yes we should start pre-emptive strikes on every body who is out of favour with the West this week ,If it all fucks up we can arm them again if we need them to attack their neighbours .
