I read the first Harry in one day.

I saw it last night. I thought it was gloomy and paced very slow through most of it. And some fairly important characters got little or even no screentime. But it was nevertheless good - I'd be happy to go out and watch Part 2 tonight!

That is typically what I do, pick up a book and read through 300+ pages in an afternoon, 'tis why I daren't pick up a book at the moment.
Men! They're all beasts!
Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

lol... it's just meant for kids and it kind of shows, and some of us get bored by that sort of thing. Hardly a mystery, and that's why the "book for children" argument crops up.

Far be it from me to say I'm superior because of this, 'tis simply my taste and, sure, I might bully someone a bit by tossing in a snide remark about that  but that's how things go, I'm afraid :)
See I wouldn't really say they're meant for kids - well maybe the first two are, but by the time you get to the 4th and 5th books they're dealing with subjects like murder, war, torture, racism, in quite a lot of detail. I'd say they're more meant for teens. And they're very well written so there's no reason anyone can't enjoy them.
I'll always like them anyway, because I grew up with them - when the fourth book came out, I was in the same year at school as Harry was at Hogwarts.

I've never really liked the films though, they've just never lived up to what I thought they could have been. And each time a new one comes out, I do watch them (though usually just torrent), but I can't enjoy them because I'm constantly thinking "that didn't happen in the book, that makes no sense, that also never happened, that completely contradicts the rest of the plot". I think they spent too much time in long sequences of special effects, when they could have been getting on with telling the actual story.

When the last book came out some people were doing a 7 Potters in 7 Days challenge, but I'm far too slow a reader to do that. I think it would take me closer to a month. :hehe:
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

I had to buy two of the last one. I got an eight hour headstart on Brenda because she had to work that day (and her boss told me in no uncertain terms to NOT bring her copy to her. ) She started reading it when she got home and finished it about 6 am the next morning. Good thing she didn't have to work that day.

I had motivation to read them. Brenda as a children's librarian and read the books for her courses. And naturally, she had to have someone to argue about them with. For that reason, but not solely that reason, I have read them all and seen all the movies. And I'm not insecure enough in my adulthood to pretend they're "beneath me."

Okay, OGBs, your turn.

I said nothing about "snooty". This is not the only forum I'm on where HP is being discussed, and the OGBs come out of the woodwork at the mention of Harry.
No, you said it was all born out of insecurity... At any rate I'm not too bothered what you wanna label it... but I will object to being labelled an old grumpy bastard at 25 :|

If so then I've been one since my teens.

I said nothing about your insecurities, although you've since said volumes.

As for being an OGB, there's no lower age limit. Ask TMH. :smug:

Oh, I see... My frail ego read so much into that, you didn't in any way imply that that's what others do when they say "meh, mediocre literature, not worth reading when I've got a bumload of other books from the contemporary and classical canon that I've neglected".

But I'm assuming you won't admit to that being implied either?

edit: Tbh re-reading it now it's ambiguous... you might just be saying that "I'm not going to pretend I'm too adult for it when I in fact like it"... I prolly inferred too much but I'd say it's an honest mistake... and no, it's not an indication of me rationalising and being frustrated in my attempts at it... though now you'll take that sentence and say "methinks the lady doth protest too much", but that might be me assuming too much again so I'm going to smash my keyboard and stay away from this thread now.

As for the OGB, I know grumpy and bastard can be thrown around willy nilly, but surely old does have a fairly clear cut-off point, and it dun occur in the tweens... or is it a state of mind? If so, why are we dedicating "old" to these negative connotations? Is it possibly ageism in a way?

"Old" as in "this shit gets old quick, so lighten up" old. And I say nothing ambiguous about other people.

Tbh I was joking with my extended musings... also, I didn't say you said something ambiguous about us... I meant it was ambiguous in that you could be referring to what you thought the general condition was (one either likes Harry Potter, or one is engaging in "I'm too old for this shit"-isms), or just simply that in your case the most feasible reason for disliking it would have to be a rationale like that. Or something to those effects... at least that's how I read it.

That's all.
