Americans call themselves CHRISTians, but in nearly 60 years I have yet to meet one.

Bullshit!!! Late December is the holiday season because it's close to the solstice. Christmas is in late December because late December is the holiday season.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. by that logic we should throw ou t thursday (Thor's day).
words change meaning and significance over time and place. a faggot used to be a bundle of sticks. in england it's a meaty treat and over on these isles you can get away with smoking a fag.
so i don't get the big deal with calling christmas, 'christmas'. i think it's bad form when atheists start whining about tradition just because it has a religious connotation.
Thank you, some people get it.

No one has yet to explain why it is a bad thing, in a season of many holidays, to tell someone, "Happy holidays."

Are you insinuating that MY favorite holiday isn't the only one worth mentioning? :irate:

Why do you hate and oppress me so? :dq:

no one has claimed that it is.
the problem people are having is calling it 'happy christmas' it's them that need to account for why they frown so much on something many of us simply don't see as a big deal.
if shops want to put happy christmas up in order to satisfy customer demand then they have a right to and that's capitalism for you anyway. shops that don't want to don't have to and may lose out to competitors.

I personally don't care either way. But I don't think the "Happy Holidays" crowd is the one that boycotts retailers for which greeting they use (looking at you, Christian-Right).

they need something to cry about. if they don't feel their values and the moral fabric of society is in a constant state of decline, tempting them along with it, then they wouldn't need saving.

I hope you realise that Christmas, like all traditions, began as an innovation. It was an innovation that replaced previous traditions. The truth is that the fictitious date of the alleged Son of God's birth was not settled on by some coincidence. It was designed to more easily supplant christian ritual over a pagan one; the celebration of the winter solstice. The trick worked most brilliantly.

Why exactly are you opposing attempts to supplant this - most recent - tradition? Why should we stop attempts to change things now?

:mehthis: The christian trick did work brilliantly, combine that with rampant consumerism, and voila jesus's "birthday" is now celebrated world wide. Same thing christians always do, take one tradition, smash it, turn it lame and white and change the name. Get the christ out of christmas. Happy winter.
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

Christ is out of my Christmas, just as much as he's out of my name.
Happy Winter to you too, and a Merry Christmas. :flowers:
