Did you even bother to read the article? That's what people were trying to do...they wanted 'things to be different and tried to change them'. The people who 'declare things changed and leave' are now the American Family Association.

Retailers were naturally choosing to use more generic terms like Happy Holidays and Season's Greetings until they started getting pressure from American Family Association. Do you know who they are, and what their reasons are for doing this is? I dare you to open the link and listen for a couple of minutes.

You may accept that this is a christian nation and it should stay that way, but I do not. I would like to see us become a secular nation one day.

Fuck American Family Association and their hateful Naughty and Nice drive, their boycott Sears for "extremely offensive and pornographic posters" that they sell online, and their boycott of Home Depot for giving gifts to homosexual activists.

I'm going to make a point of trying to buy any gifts I get this season from the stores that are listed as naughty ones. It's more fitting for me to go with the naughty as an atheist anyway.

It's not a matter of Christian/Secular. We get Dec 24th/25th off because of Christmas. Not some made up holidays or less important Jewish Ceremonies. The traditions that the stores are selling items for are Christmas traditions.

I am telling you there is a difference between saying what things SHOULD be and what things ARE. Christmas is Christmas, saying it is a generic holiday doesn't make it a fucking generic holiday. There are other holidays around Christmas too, y'know. New year's Eve and New Year's Day being big ones. Throughout most of December I say "Happy Holidays." On Christmas Day of course I would say, "Merry Christmas."

Sigh. I am glad that both in Swedish and in Finnish we use the pre-xian Norse word for the midwinter / solstice feast - "jul" and "joulu", same root as Yule. As there is nothing xian in the word, there is no need for a fight.

Christmas is what you make it. At my house, it's a time for hubby to get extra time off work. It's a time to have lots of yummy food with the family members I care to still spend time with. It's a time to shower my wonderful children with deserving gifts. It's a time for pretty decorations and lights that make my kids smile.

That's a nice fiction, but the truth is that December is the holiday season because of Christmas. Was September the holiday season this year? No? When do you think the High Holy days were? Eid ul-Fitr? I bet you can't even ballpark that one without using google/wikipedia. And are we really going to use Wiccan holidays? There is a lesser Sabbat near there, I suppose...

You can say the fiction as you wish. When we say Happy Holidays, it's not plural, because the Holiday in question is Christmas.

I'd rather focus on making Christmas non-secular, rather than spinning fictions about its role in our culture.

That is true, but all the time off of work and extra shopping and all that good stuff are due to Christmas. I respect the other holidays, but without Christmas, this holiday season wouldn't be a big deal at all.
