A few years ago, at a playgroup nativity, the lyrics to one of the songs included the line (I paraphrase only slightly): "It really happened."

Fortunately for a three year old living with increasingly sceptical and determined parents, "really" was just pretend too.

Mini Huxley 1 is already adamant that there is no such thing as magic so I doubt she will be much impressed by the Bibble story.

I was an angel. We had to have white lace up pumps to go with our white dress and wings. My mother forgot to get them, so I was the only one in a conspicuous line up of angels, who was wearing black pumps. Sign of things to come...

I went to a Church of England primary school, yet only one of the Christmas plays I can remember was the nativity. The others were The Bumblesnouts, and something to do with Mexicans and French people.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Mine both done Nativity plays. They are both aware that it's all bollocks, too. They just enjoyed doing it.Why let them miss out on fun, when all the other kids are doing it?

And it's something of a tradition, too. Can you imagine a day when they stop having a nativity play at Christmas?

Most of the other plays they do are also fictional. I think you could keep it in context. And as far as religious stories go, the birth of Jesus is fairly tame. Joseph married a knocked-up girl. That was honorable, and might have saved her life, considering Jewish law. Joseph worked hard under bad circumstances to provide for his family and find them lodging. Angels, wise men, shepherds. Rather a nice inter-racial, inter-species, inter-class shindig.

Now a "passion play" is another matter...
