And what if you asked her?

WASHINGTON: Will she or won't she? Two years out from the next US presidential race and amid the most fiercely contested and acrimonious midterm elections in years, Republicans and Democrats alike are pondering the political ambition of Sarah Palin.

She continues to skirt the issue of a run for the White House, but the former Alaskan governor enjoys one of the highest profiles in the country, headlining Tea Party rallies from Nevada to New Jersey in the final week of a campaign that is expected to culminate in an electoral wipeout for Democrats next Tuesday.

With the President, Barack Obama, also cranking up his campaign appearances, commentators have been quick to frame their efforts as a precursor to a titanic clash in 2012.

The Republican strategist Karl Rove, a former adviser to President George W. Bush, cautioned there was a long way to go before a Republican nominee would emerge, but conceded Mrs Palin would be a serious contender should she choose to run.

''There are going to be several geological ages that are going to come and go before the 2012 presidential nomination gels,'' Mr Rove said on CBS's Face the Nation on Sunday. ''Every one of these prospective candidates, if they decide to enter the race, has strengths that they need to work on magnifying and weaknesses that they need to endeavour to overcome.'' He dodged a question about whether Mrs Palin would make a good president, saying only that she would be a ''formidable candidate''.

Observers are divided over whether the 46-year-old will run, some noting that her ''all care-no responsibility'' political stirring probably offered her the best of both worlds.

Mrs Palin pulls in six-figure appearance fees and divides her time between campaigning and her media commitments: she is a paid contributor on Rupert Murdoch's conservative Fox News network and has just finished an eight-part documentary on Alaska due to screen on lifestyle channel TLC next month.

In a promo for the series, Mrs Palin is seen climbing in snow-capped mountains and kayaking in pristine waters exclaiming ''this is flippin' fun''.

''I'd rather be doing this than [be] in some silly old political office,'' she says. ''I'd rather be out here being free.''

Some commentators question whether they are the utterances of a serious presidential candidate but others consider the program just another part of Mrs Palin's image-making for the Republicans' presidential nomination contest.

At the weekend, the former 2008 vice-presidential candidate intensified her attack on Mr Obama and the Democrat-controlled Congress at a fund-raiser in Orlando, Florida, where she urged about 1000 Republican supporters to dig deep for the cause.

''You know, the President is now telling us we're not thinking straight because of all of the fear and frustration,'' she said.

''You know Mr President, you have it right on one point. We are afraid, knowing that your economic policies are driving us off a cliff.'' Laughing, she added: ''Please God, don't let anyone tell Obama what number comes after a trillion.'' America's languishing economy, near-10 per cent unemployment and escalating public debt (now nudging $US14 trillion) have turned voters sharply against Democrats.

Opinion polls suggest Republicans will retake control of the House of Representatives by winning an extra 40 to 50 seats.

''Our government and our country has really gotten off track,'' Mrs Palin said. ''But people also know there's nothing wrong with America that we can't fix with a good old-fashioned election.''
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."
