How dare you vote as an individual!

Amanda Fazio, a right-wing MP and president of the upper house, faces expulsion from the Labor Party after she crossed the floor on a bill dealing with the sale of illegal pornography.

Ms Fazio admitted she broke the rule that Labor MPs must vote along party lines - except if they are allowed a conscience vote - when she voted for a Greens amendment during a debate in Parliament on Tuesday night.

''I accept that I have broken the rules of the party and will abide by the decision of the party,'' Ms Fazio said in a statement yesterday.

Ms Fazio was charged with ''disloyal or unworthy conduct'' and was suspended from the ALP. She will not be allowed to caucus with her parliamentary colleagues until she faces a disputes committee hearing, which has the power to expel her.

She is the first Labor MP to cross the floor in the 15 years of this Labor state government. While other MPs have abstained from voting on certain issues, the last member to vote against the government was the Labor MP for Illawarra, George Peterson, who was automatically expelled after he opposed changes to workers' compensation in 1987.

Party headquarters is said to be dumbfounded by Ms Fazio's decision, given her vote had no bearing on the outcome of the bill, and she did not speak to it during the debate.

Senior Labor sources said the party would be loath to expel such a senior and highly regarded member, but to allow her to stay would set a dangerous precedent. ''There's little wriggle room when you cross the floor'', a source said.

In June Ms Fazio put a proposal before the party to legalise the sale of X 18+ rated films in NSW. In NSW such material can only be possessed for personal use.

On Tuesday night she voted to support a Greens bid to remove parts of a bill that would force retailers charged with selling non-violent erotica material to pay hundreds of dollars in fees to have it formally classified if they did not agree with an initial assessment made by police that the material would likely be rated X 18+ or Restricted Classification (RC) by the Classification Board.

Liberal and National MPs, as well as the Shooters, Family First and Christian Democrats all voted in favour of the bill, which the government says will save money and remove unnecessary red tape.

Ms Fazio will continue as president of the Legislative Council, as that role is decided by the house, not the government.

How is she a "right wing" MP if she's the one trying to legalize the sale of X rated material?

It means she is predominantly right wing but took a progressive, left-wing stance on this particular issue.

Nah both parties are centre-right these days it just depends on the degree of right-wing that seperates liberal and labor.

Sure it does.
We have the extreme right in the Liberals, and the moderate right in the Labor party.

Sort of like Merka and the Democrats.

They have a very politically correct view of the evils of pornography (influenced by a particular brand of feminism). They also want to appear to be "doing the right thing" in terms of the fabled family voter...

I suspect libertarian would be more correct...

'libertarian' is a rubbish term. If libertarians had their way we'd be living in Anarchy.

Lock a bunch of libertarians and anarchists in a room shit could get interesting. :awesome:

In the US the two party system is absolute and all encompassing therefor you have republicans that will vote with the democrats and vice versa. In Australia it is not especially with the rise of the greens such a move by that lady would be severely frowned upon especially with the factional parasites as disunity is considered death by both parties.

The problem is that the party fires or severely reprimands anyone who doesn't adhere to party lines.

I'm fucking sick of it. They have to be granted the right to vote in accordance with their own beliefs let alone on behalf of their actual electorate, I mean fucking hell. Whatever happened to democracy? Oh, yeah, cunting ideologues, that's what.
