There is, at least in the USN, no automatic court-martial for a grounding. USS Enterprise grounded quite publicly in San Francisco Bay one time, and as far as I know, nobody got busted. The ships are usually in the hands of a pilot, someone very familiar with those particular waters, but the sea seldom sends out notices when a new sandbar is formed.

A young officer named Chester Nimitz once ran his ship aground. Someone eventually decided that it wasn't really his fault, and gave him a second chance to make something of himself.
