It's a myth that Americans are "too proud" to do certain jobs. Plenty of farmworkers are Americans.

According to the US Department of Labor’s year 2000 statistics, 77% 4 of the non-migrant farmworkers surveyed identified as "US born white" (Not including H2-A guest workers). Of all farmworkers, including the H2-A seasonal/migrant workers - about 20% or so are US born and white. That's 1 in 5. So, clearly, plenty of white, native born Americans ARE willing to do these jobs, and aren't too proud.

We all know why Mexicans are filling the migrant jobs in huge numbers - wages - the Mexicans can travel up here seasonally and make what would be ridiculously low wages for someone who has to pay the cost of living here in the States, but which is an awesome amount of money by Mexican standards.

It has nothing to do with being "too proud" - Americans do tons of horrible, unpalatable jobs. It's the pay.

I resent your calling my statistic misleading, since I wasn't misleading in the least. I provided, and you cut out, the qualifiers on that statistic -- wherein I noted - specifically - explicitly - clearly - that the 77% statistic did not include migratory workers. I also clarified after that - and you cut that out in your repost - that when you included migratory/seasonal folks, the US born-white group drops to about 22% -- which is STILL 1 in 5 workers estimated to be white and US born. That's not chump change of a statistic.

The one thing I wasn't, mai, is "misleading."

Further - I will make it very clear here that the vast majority of migrant workers are LEGALLY allowed to work here in the US. Merely being a foreign worker in the US doesn't make one an illegal alien. The vast majority of foreign workers in the US work here perfectly legally, and they do these jobs that were supposedly claimed to be jobs that nobody wants to do except illegal workers.

So - what we do know is that (a) most workers doing these supposedly so unpalatable jobs that no American would ever do them are LAWFUL workers, and not illegal, and (b) that a good chunk of them are white, US born Americans (about 1 in 5).

It's just a myth that "illegal aliens do jobs that Americans refuse to do." Americans do them, as do legal aliens.
