Re: What's your "favorite" war(s)?
I have a new "favorite" war: the War of the Pacific, fought between Chile and Peru/Bolivia from 1879-1883.
The root cause of the war was guano. Yes, bird droppings. The barren coast of Bolivia (it has a 200-mile coastline back then) was the world's #1 source of guano, used for agriculture and explosive saltpeter. Chilean companies mined it and, by pre-arranged agreement, provided a tax fee to the Bolivian government. Well, the Bolivian government in 1878 decided to raise the tax by 10 cents a ton; after Chile refused to accept the new price, Bolivia declared war and invoked a defensive alliance with Peru, dragging them into a war they had no interest in. The Chileans responded by sending their naval fleet up against the other fleets. By the time Chile won the war, there were 55,000 soldiers and sailors dead or wounded, and Bolivia no longer had a coastline.
Perhaps the best result of the war is that the US, through the observers they sent to monitor the naval actions, was forced to realize how woefully obsolete the American Navy was. An extensive modernization program began in the 1880s, the Office of Naval Intelligence was established, and by the end of the 1890s the US Navy whupped a major European power in the Spanish-American War.
