You not understanding that it's based on studies which demonstrate it's an effective way to sell more doesn't negate the fact you are conscious of them being there.

And in the case of bakeries, the Woolworths bakery is right down the front where I shop, as soon as you come in. The meats are right down the back so no matter what you have to go through an aisle.

No really. Much of what they do is intentionally unconscious. They use colours, scents, and other stimuli to put you in the spending mood. It's a fairly well known practice that large corporations use. It's been well studied and is a standard marketing practice.
