Er, I hate new anything, even New Coke.
Old is good.
So I am a Joseph McCabe atheist, forget Dawkins. He is fun for biology.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing."
Can anybody here elaborate on this? I have no scientific/mathematical background so I really don't get it.

Well, I think they use math for that, since common sense runs out long before that.

I find it depressing to say the least that one of the greatest minds of modern physics gets his likely last book published, and the doG theme is the *only* one the media jump on.
ABC takes the cake, though: "Stephen Hawking Says God Did Not Create the Universe: What Do You Think?"

"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." -
Maureen J

When is this new book out?
I should probably read that other one I have that I was given and forgot about.

A Monkey Shaved wrote:The only "God" that makes sense to me is the "God" of the scientific pantheist which adopts the view that God and the universe are one in the same thing. In other words a god totally lacking in any intelligence which is totally unaware of its own existence because it is really no more than the personification of the laws of nature and physics. Scientific pantheism therefore is just a diplomatic form of atheism which Einstein warmed up to. He might as well of been more up front like Hawking and said god was not required in the creation of the universe and does not exist and be done with it.
Yep. "Pantheism is sexed up atheism." - Richard Dawkins.

In A Brief History of Time Hawking predicted that by 2000 there would quite possibly be a 'theory of everything', i.e. something which unified or made sense of the contradictions inherent between special relativity and quantum mechanics. He has invoked something called 'M theory' (please don't ask!) to do this at least in part, one might cynically suggest, in order that the 'theory of everything' is achieved.
Now I don't understand the maths obviously and Hawking has always been ace as far as I am concerned, but there does seem to be some element of vanity in this agenda.
Just sayin'

BBC Newsnight is going to have a feature on this in about 30 minutes or so.
A physicist-minister is going to be the chief interviewee.
