Selling out is abandoning one fan base to attract a larger, more lucrative one. There are artists that do not do this and still achieve commercial success. There are artists that do this and either fail utterly because they misread the market or they gain some short term success and then fizzle out after one or two hits.
There are also artists who spend their lives playing what they want to play, how they want to play it for a small but loyal fan base and still making a decent living at it. Some of these artists I like a lot. I'll buy their CDs, even if I've already downloaded them, and come out to see them when they come through the area, often dragging my friends with me.
They'll probably never be millionaires, but they'll be ok with the material that they're playing.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

The Net is best considered analogous to communication with disincarnate intelligences. As any neophyte would tell you. Do not invoke that which you have no facility to banish.
