Things that bands have done that make you MAD
Re: Things that bands have done that make you MAD
If the band was successful, why change?
Unless, of course, their interest was money at which point they're still being honest, the fanbase was just deluded enough to believe the band cared about them as people.

It is partly about the fan base, but more so it should be about making music that they want to make, songs that they like. The Mad Hatter wrote:If the band was successful, why change?

But I don't see that it's either or with the money.
It is sorta like if a guy goes into the armed forces in order to get some college money so he can escape poverty. Let's say that he's offered a great deal of money to switch and fight for the other side. Should he do it? Does it have to be just a job?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

If a band is wiilling to alter their style for more money, they were never dedicated to it in the first place. The fanbase makes demands and assumptions about a band and its actions and motives. Their zeal is ridiculous. They claim the band owes them. Nonsense. The band is putting in all the work, taking all the risks, and a lot of the money goes to the agent or record company, and often both.

Well yes that is the OP innit ? if it were just a matter of a few albums in a different style then I wouldn't be so pissed off with them but in the total package of the band it was typical ,they knew they were shit albums ,churned out when they were too high and too rich to care . They never cared a bit about the fans they lied about that all along just like they lied about many many other things . fuckem hope they die horribly so all my rare vinyl goes up in price .The Mad Hatter wrote:Which you disapprove of.

Then the core fans do not owe the band their continuing approval. If maximum cash is what the band is out for, then they can be satisfied with it.The Mad Hatter wrote:If a band is wiilling to alter their style for more money, they were never dedicated to it in the first place. No. The Money. The money they get from royalties, from endorsements, from public appearances, from sponsors.
The money.

Of course the fans don't owe the band their approval, nor does the band need their approval. The band is free to pursue whatever the hell it wants to, the fans are free to agree or disagree, but the fans aren't entitled to any special consideration because they liked what the band produced earlier on.Robert_S wrote:Then the core fans do not owe the band their continuing approval. So then why worry about whether or not those fans say that the band sold out?The Mad Hatter wrote:Of course the fans don't owe the band their approval, nor does the band need their approval. Worry? It's not worry, it's annoyance. The "fans" are saying the band owes them a specific kind of music in a specific way.

Re: Things that bands have done that make you MAD
I don't think the fans feel like they are necessarily owed anything, but there is an understandable sense of disappointment. think it's an appropriate response when what used to be captivating and interesting material from honest and passionate musicians becomes bland and mediocre. The Mad Hatter wrote:Worry? The term 'sold out' refers to betrayal. If the fans don't expect a particular sort of submission and allegiance then they wouldn't use the term.

UB40 - a pretty decent reggae outfit with a political slant. They produced a few rocking albums in the early 80s and then...

Which came first, the band or the fans? Who made the music that the fans think they have right to dictate direction over?
