Things that bands have done that make you MAD

Post by Wumbologist » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:05 pm

Apocalyptica's increasing tendency to add LYRICS and VOCALS to their tracks. It was OK the way they did it on Reflections, where the tracks with lyrics were essentially bonus versions of tracks they already had on the album. The focus was still on the cellos, and it was good. Every track I've heard from them on the radio has been nothing less than cringe-inducing. The lyrics suck suck SUCK, they sound like garbage Linkin Park would put out. And if that's not enough, the music behind it has gone downhill.

I guess it's working if the vocals garbage gets them radio time, but it still sucks. :lay:

Listen to their fans instead of pursuing their own interests and ideas.

Well, I went to a concert last Sunday and Buckcherry was just too fucking loud. I'd have gone home if I wasn't having to be there for work.

Sell out? I hate that term. It's so bloody generic and it always translates to " do what I don't approve of".

No, it means compromising your original artistic (or anti-artistic) vision, tastes and goals in order to reach a wider audience for the sole purpose of making more money. I make a distinction between that and writing a popular song or two to pay the bills.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

That's not selling out at all, that's you disapproving of their actions.

That's a small audience becoming less likely to buy their albums and a larger audience becoming more likely to.

Which you disapprove of.

But...but a song isn't a proper song unless it's got singing in it  I like these second example from the OP better  I thought the first one was kinda boring
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Well if you don't then sorry, but why call it selling out then? Why not call it "a decision"? That's all it is, they're deciding to change their approach to what they believe is in their best interests. There's nothing even remotely close to 'selling out' about it.

Most often it's not the bands who make these decisions anyway.

Oh no, it's just the way things go. A band has the kind of sincerity that drives them to make their music available to the world, even though the chances for success are slim. Then once they get that success, they use their newfound cynicism to capitalize on the fan base that loved their original honesty to propel them into superstardom for a minute or two.

The original fan base, the one that came out to see the band back in the day, the ones who bought their albums and T-shirts , dragged their friends out to see the band, introduced new people to the band... all those people no longer have the band they loved.

But from the band's perspective, they are just looking out for themselves.
