Why I love America

Post by mistermack » Mon Aug 30, 2010 3:12 pm

America gets lots of stick, from me as much as anybody, so I made a list of all the things I LIKE about the US, just to remind myself of the good things.
It's not complete by any means, so I would love to read other peoples suggestions.

I SUGGEST that it's better to keep this as a plain list, and start a new thread if you disagree with any postings, or think they are worth a debate. I think it would be better to just keep this for things you like, rather than mentioning things you dislike.

American stuff I like.
Not in order.

A) Comedy

1) Frasier
2) Cheers
3) Roseanne
4) Married with children
5) Chris Rock standup
6) Bewitched
7) Beverly Hillbillies (1)

9) Laurel & Hardy
10)

I live here.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

Serious stuff:
An elected head of state
A written constitution
A democratic culture that has helped spread modern ideas throughout the world.

Less serious:
Some great tv: Buffy, BSG, Hill Street Blues/NYPD Blue, Boston Legal, Frasier, Star Trek...
Some great music: Pixies, REM, Zappa, Fleet Foxes, Howlin Wolf...

1) Free market.
2) Most people speak a language I happen to know.
3) It's fun taking flak from the rest of the world.

NFL football, some good bands, great landscape.
Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

I love America for many reasons, including the incredible variety of music and foods. I love it for the fact that it was founded on democratic ideals, and no matter how compromised those things might be, most of us still hold those ideals in our hearts and minds. I love America for the incredible beauty of places like Hawaii, the Pacific Northwest, for the spacious skies and amber waves of grain...not to mention the purple mountain majesties. I love America for the way that I have seen it change in my lifetime to be more accepting of women, gays, African-Americans and other minorities.

Yes, the very real problems are there, but, at its best, America is a work in progress, a place where many how been able to realize their dreams and many others are still hoping to do that.

PS: One of the other things I love about America is that we play real football here, and football season is upon us. Our long national nightmare, otherwise known as baseball season (actually, I like baseball) is coming to an end. Let the games begin!

Like this? Or are you on about the game where a bunch of morbidly obese Americans roll around in the mud with each other? That isn't football, that's gay ball.

No U!

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Robert S, Us red-blooded Americans are not going to take any shit about American football being the superior sport. That other sissy game is designed for girls and guys who can "bend it like Beckham." ("Bend it like Beckham" is a reference to his dick, right?) Real men play real football! OK, I hope that settles that once and for all.

Twoflower, I still think you're cute. Do they have cheerleaders for soccer games? If you have grown up in America, you probably would have run around in one of those cute, little cheerleader outfits. That's another reason why I love America. From what I can tell, there are hot women all over the globe, and, thankfully, America has its fair share.
