Ratz Mafia

Post by Zigmen » Fri Aug 27, 2010 4:09 am

First, I'd like to thank all of you who joined up and brought Ratz Mafia back from the pitfalls it had once experienced. In some cases, the decision to commit once again took a leap of faith from some of you. I applaud you for taking the chance.

Next, we have some issues with time zones. I am going to be extending the gaming portion of the days by 1 hour, making them end at midnight EST in all future games. It's not much, but it's a place to start. I may move up the start time a bit, but we'll start with the 1 hour extension and see how we do.

The Ratz staff needs to be thanked as well. They have put together a new and well considered plan for moderating this area. We could be in bad shape if we were hosted by a staff that didn't care enough to work to accomodate our special needs. Thanks, staffers!

What started a couple weeks ago as a simple idea to host "Mini Mafia" games for 4-8 players has already expanded greatly, and we now have 14 players on our recurring sign-up list.

I'm finding that I do enjoy hosting a great deal, so this is great fun for me.

But I'm also happy to help others take the reigns and run their own games here as well. This isn't Zig's Mafia. It's Ratz Mafia, and it belongs to all of you.

I do think that the recurring sign-ups have eliminated days of down-time. People stay on as long as they like, and the games run back-to-back. And, people can sign out when they need a break for work or real life commitments.

So, I figured that we could discuss this new incarnation of Ratz Mafia, and try to make sure we have the best fit for our players.

I'd also like to open a roster for new GMs, whether you need help or not.

I'm happy to keep running the games, but fresh blood means fresh ideas, and that's what I'd like to see here.

So, add you name in BOLD If you'd like to GM an upcoming game. Give us an idea when you'd be ready to launch and if you need any assistance in terms or set-up or running the game.

Ultimately, I'd like to see a list of GMs who run Mafia in a looping order, and that we keep the recurring sign-ups for
our players.

I'm open to any and all suggestions, and I'd love to hear from any volunteers who might like to run a game, be they new or veterans.

What say you?

I like the recurring lists as well. That was a good idea on your part. :) Definitely does make things a lot easier.

Also, I think so far these mini games have been a great success! It's actually nice playing a game that doesn't really last too long, or one that doesn't require you to keep track of tons of players. Even though, that is fun too - it makes the game a little more daunting for those who want to commit to it.

Thanks staffers as well! I enjoy playing mafia on this forum. It's a great group of people playing here.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying running the game, Zigmen. I might take an interest at some point - but, I know it's a large responsibility, don't know if I'd be able to commit to that. But, it'd be nice to repay some of the GM's by giving them a bit of a break, and allowing them to play as well.

Thanks again Zig! These games have been great so far. :td:

Yes, indeed, much appreciated. Also to oblivion, who really helped get Mafia up and running here in the first place. to you both.

Oblivion is my Mentor. All success stems back to her.

well...J.A. Poisson taught me most of what I know about game design (the parts that weren't taught by irate hordes of players when my games were badly unbalanced :D). He also taught me a lot about playing mafia. So, it's actually been three generations of imported mafia knowledge here at ratz. I still think his post in the Spooks postgame analysis about how to be a town player is one of the most helpful things I've ever read as a player.

I'm almost always up for running a simple game. I usually need a week or so of lead time to put together a more complicated game (a la lolcats or Dune mafia), and I usually need 20-24 players for a complex game.

I'd like to play one of your more complex games here, oblivion. I'm sure I'll be up for it by then.

I'm going to run a game sometime in the next week or two if I can get at least 20 players to sign up.
