I was thinking the other day about the story of Lot in Sodom. he was supposed to find at least 10 "good men" or else God was going to destroy the whole town.
what we think of as "good men", are people who don't run around killing people, are pious somehow, and don't have many vices.
when a christian tells you the story of Lot, he implies that's what a "good man" is, and christians are "good men" just like that, and that's what their god wants.
but everywhere else in the old testament, God commands his followers to slaughter entire towns, kidnap women whenever they feel like it, etc.etc.
am I missing something here? those 10 "good men" in Sodom would have been, with no problem, those who slaughter and rape with the blessing of their God?
there's some kind of disconnect here. are christians hypocritical, or was the story supposed to mean exactly that: God's "good men" slaughtered people and raped women.
and would a christian admit to either of those?

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.
Is suspect that by "good" men, the god in the story wants men who would not rape and murder the
wrong people.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Is somebody implying hypocrisy and contradiction in the wholly babble??!!1!
OK then.

Why bother trying to make sense of this stuff? It is nonsense for the most part from beginning to end. The only part of the babble I ever think of as saying something relevant any more is the sermon on the mount - and only bits of that.
Yesterday on the radio I heard a discussion between a 'multi-faith' group. The Christian said he believed that 'suffering is a gift from god'. The bastard...not really relevant to the OP, but another reminder of the crap that is spouted in the name of religion.

I once read a convincing article that suggested that the 10 commandments (thou shalt not kill, covet thy neighbour's goat, etc) was only relevant in the context of the direct tribal relationships of the Israelites. Makes sense, since everyone else was fair game according to the same god.
