What, no Australian election thread???
Re: What, no Australian election thread???
News here just said that the top two parties might be only a seat off of each other and recounts were going on in several locations... but what do we know?

Now I'm curious... voting in Australia is compulsory and enforced for many elections, but what are the penalties, Oz people? Surely there are people who don't vote. Fines? Jail (I'd hope not)?BrettA wrote:Hey! Ya got the 'Vote or else' fer relevant!Gawdzilla wrote:You want relevant? To be precise, it is only compulsory to turn up at the polling booth, get your name ticked off, and receive your ballot papers. You can put them in the collection box unmarked, or with ararchist rants written all over them, and all is OK (it is counted as an informal vote)...BrettA wrote:Now I'm curious... voting in Australia is compulsory and enforced for many elections, but what are the penalties, Oz people? Re: What, no Australian election thread???
Current upshot seems to be a hung parliament, with an equal number of seats to the incumbent ruling party (Labour) and Her Majesty's loyal opposition (The coalition between the Liberals and the Nationals)
There are 4 or 5 seats held by independents, and one Green. The Green will vote with Labour, but the independents will probably be seduced by the opposition, so I am betting Australia will have a rabid, right wing catholic PM in a week or so...

I hope they're not. I couldn't stand having Abbott as our Prime Minister.

I thought the Australian Sex Party was a spoof until I read their wiki page and policies.

Aye, for being a fringe party they've got some free publicity from the comedy shows because of their name. Hopefully every vote these fringe party folks get is a vote taken away from Liberal.Pappa wrote:I thought the Australian Sex Party was a spoof until I read their wiki page and policies.
