Dem Senate Candidate Greene Indicted on "Obscenity" charge

Post by Coito ergo sum » Fri Aug 13, 2010 8:22 pm

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Longshot Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene was indicted Friday on two charges, including a felony charge of showing pornography to a teenage student in a South Carolina college computer lab.
Greene surprised the party establishment with his primary victory in June. His arrest in November was first reported by The Associated Press the day after he won the nomination.
Authorities said he approached a student in a University of South Carolina computer lab, showed her obscene photos online, then talked about going to her dorm room.

I never knew a person could get indicted for showing porn to a college student. I like how they call her a "teenage" student. She was probably 18 or 19, since she was in college. This smells like bullshit to me.

It probably wouldn't be a crime unless she was a minor.

Then the question becomes, why would the article not say that she was a minor? It uses the curiously vague term "teenager."

A Richland County grand jury indicted Greene, 32, for disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity – a felony – as well as a misdemeanor charge of communicating obscene materials to a person without consent.
Yes you're right, this does sound fishy since the charges themselves mention nothing about minors.
An expert in obscenity law tells TPMmuckraker that the statute being used to prosecute South Carolina Democratic Senate candidate Alvin Greene for allegedly showing a college student porn is on the books in every state but is almost never enforced.

I googled a few other articles, and tried to find anything that would say her age.

My bet is that he was set up.

I saw a comment on the HP that said she was 19, though I'm not sure where that came from. Looks like his website has been totally dismantled.

I would imagine she probably was. Most colleges haven't started yet, so odds are she wasn't a freshman, some of whom are 17 due to late birthdays.

Most likely she is a returning sophomore, at least, meaning she's probably 19 ish.

I can absolutely see them tracking this guy, figuring out they could get him on this kind of thing, and then setting him up.

What the fuck - there couldn't have been cops there. What happened? A 19 year old girl sees some naked people fucking and runs to the cops?

Something is rotten in the State of South Carolina.
