Militant Atheism - need to be more tactically inventive?

Post by Santa_Claus » Thu Aug 12, 2010 10:52 pm

Whilst I think that Dawkins has made an important contribution to Atheism, on the whole, I think he's a bit of a knob :D And somewhat too heavily involved in the thinking end - answering the question "how many Atheists can you fit on the head of a pin?" is all very useful (answer: "as many you want - just gotta kill all the Angels first" :toot: ).....but it doesn't help on the practical side of killing the current crop of gods.

To do that needs more practical solutions and tactics. and dare I say it.......Atheism could learn a thing or two from religions on that side of things! especially that no need to play fair or be reasonable. It's a religous war, not a debate.

I would favour a combination of faux reasonableness, mockery and perjorative language with something like:

A Campaign for Religous Intolerance - I don't see any legal problem with being against the concept of all religions................. and tactically pushing for practical things like a law against the religous grooming of children (deliberate choice of language) both in state funded schools and also by private organisations (schools / churches = child grooming centres). Got to make the current religions look like the pagans, druids etc and to do that have to do as the religions do - target the kids! or at least remove them from the brainwashing factories.......... "Do you want your kid educated in the bronze age, the iron age, the 9th Century or for the 21st Century?"

Possibly also using double meaning slogans "Leave the kids alone!" or "Say No! to Ignorance"- harmless enough not to attract legal problems, but when on a simple sticker attached to a Church door on an organised basis sends a message.......graffiti is such old hat!

Any thoughts? or do you think the Dawkins approach on it's own will suffice?

He needs to be a kinder and gentler atheist.

People are confused. Atheism means you lack feelings, right?

I think that I lack feelings is more about being a sociopath rather than because of my atheism - but I could be wrong on that (I do keep away from shrinks).

Richard's way is only one man's way. People who are like sheaple (followers) are gonna say that we should all do what he says.

WEll, that's bullshit. We can all do it in our own way. NO need to follow anyone.

Anyhoo, that's how I see it.

Agreed... Richard has had thousands writing to him to state that he opened their eyes... same goes for Hitch, at the more provocative end of the spectrum... same goes for Dennett, at the other end (leaving Dawks somewhere in the middle).

And they ALL get decried... Dennett makes the point well; there is no good way of telling people "you've been fundamentally wrong about life and the universe all your life,"

You are right of course. Just today I discovered people are mostly idiots and i did not want to meet them. Of course, they were inside their cars when I made that discovery.

You want to be nice to the religious, fine. I won't stop you. Me? I'll go another route.

Please be nice to me. I'm still in the religious camp (technically) and I don't want any of you to hurt my feelings.

Because at this point, I am conforming to religious practice outwardly without too much inner conviction.

Thanks. It has to do with family (wife and kids and not wanting to make a big disturbance in everybody's life while I sort things out for myself)

You should've had your crisis of faith when you were 10ish, like me.

I hope it all unfolds gently for you and your family... whichever way it goes. :)

Jay, several of us have to "soldier on" for various reasons without our heart being in it. So we know what you're dealing with. And you couldn't find a better place to let your hair down and be who you really are than Rationalia.
