Afghan Casualties rising.

L: The number of civilian casualties in the Afghan war rose by a third in the first six months of 2010, with insurgents killing seven times more civilians than troops, a UN report says.

Particularly alarming was a 55 per cent increase in casualties among children and a 95 per cent increase in assassinations of civilians at the hands of insurgents.
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

There will be a certain element of the left which will use this to bash US and allied involvement, even though it is criminal action by islamic thugs...

I blame the Cold War fanatics first, and secondly I blame the rush to go invade Iraq after Rumsfeld "ran out of targets".

Without the whole "Kick out the USSR" deal, there would be alot fewer hardcore fanatics there.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Yep, there is an element of "sowing the breeze and reaping the whirlwind" in this...

I blame the teachers, cardigan wearing gits. :hehe:
“I wish no harm to any human being, but I, as one man, am going to exercise my freedom of speech. No human being on the face of the earth, no government is going to take from me my right to speak, my right to protest against wrong, my right to do everything that is for the benefit of mankind. I am not here, then, as the accused; I am here as the accuser of capitalism dripping with blood from head to foot.”

John Maclean (Scottish socialist) speech from the Dock 1918.

Who cares? Wars have casualties, and always heavy amounts of civilian casualties. Nothing seems wrong here.

SAome wars (and this one seems to be one) lave the potential to become a long-term stalemate, until one side gives up, goes back home and lets the other side win...

You're right, Jim. I blame the Ameri-somethings for the war and lawlessness over there that they created.

You are referring to the '80s stuff? Most of us ordinary citizens were under the impression that we were helping to liberate the nation from an oppressive occupier, which was true, but not the entire story.

Without holding any brief for the Soviet forces supporting the leftist regime at the time, the CIA aid to the anti-Soviet resistance was merely another cynical chess move in the cold war, with no heroic or liberating motives whatsoever. Long term vision was somewhat lacking...
