It seems to me that building a huge mosque right near the site of the WTC is in very bad taste, to say the least.

It says nothing about what was voted on, the reasons it was voted on and the consequences of the decision.

They should be able to build them within the law (local ordinances, zoning, and such).maiforpeace wrote:
So should they, or shouldn't they be able to build mosques to their heart's content?
However, they are not immune from criticism, and individuals who are so inclined may freely ridicule, criticize, deride and otherwise protest against the presence of mosques.

It's not against the law to shout fire in a crowded theater. It's against the law to start a panic by FALSELY shouting fire in a crowded theater. The Mad Hatter wrote:Free Speech is specifically about protecting opinion, that's what it has always been about.
A man shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theatre without the intention of presenting his opinion but merely to cause disruption isn't exercising his right to free speech because he is not presenting a point of view that needs to be protected even if gross and incorrect.

Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

Re: Across the US, Mosque Projects Meet Opposition
I agree with you that quite often criticism of islam or opposition to muslim migration is tainted by racism and right-wing nationalism. In addition, some of the strongest criticism comes from fundamentalist christian nutters, so atheist opposition has to make it very clear who we are not in bed with...redunderthebed wrote:
It expects opposition to mosques being built and all due the climate of fear that has being built and of course they are going to oppose what do you think they are going to take this lying down. However i think the nature of the opposition is troubling it is seen as a brown peoples religion and something foreign and evil and the opposition is merely a bigoted response to almost every wave of immigration to the west since year dot for a vast majority.Toontown merely rehashed what people like him have done as i repeat since year dot catholics jews asians and i could go on have had this shit flung at them.
I'm not saying that Islam is a belief i agree with i oppose all religions equally. However i do oppose racism and bigotry with equal measure and fervour and i think for alot of people there opposition to Islam is rooted in it and old prejudices towards immigrants and foreigners are rearing their ugly head in this guise. That in my book is far more dangerous than a minority of nutters. In fact if it isn't reigned in one day that minority could grow into a majority with a siege mentality and isolation and lack of integration into society.
Got to remember people extremism in ALL religions is a threat to a secular democratic society not just ones practiced by brown people.

However, sometimes fear of association with such folk makes left-liberal groups too easily accomodating to the particular and specific evils that are part and parcel of islam specifically, often in the name of cultural relativity and tolerance. It is not just a matter that we say "all religions are equally delusional, so they should all be opposed equally", since the actual practices and tenets of some of them are simply more dangerous and more damaging.

It is common courtesy to attribute one's quotes...sandinista wrote:All monotheistic religions, IMO, are equally delusional and should all be opposed equally.all religions are equally delusional, so they should all be opposed equally

(particularly as that was in inverted commas, and then seriously hedged...)
In a purely philosophical sense, you are right. However, religions (and their sub-groups) can also be ranked on the harmful consequences they generate. A group of mild-mannered Unitarians who operate mostly as a social club cannot be judged the same as the catholic church, with its opposition to contraception and track record of pedophilia. And the fundamentalist, misogynist and violent branches of islam are the most dangerous of all...
By their fruits ye shall know them...

Ohh so sorry. It is common courtesy to attribute one's quotes...![]()

I don't agree. From where I am from anyway, islam doesn't interfere in my life anywhere near as much as christianity does. Maybe if I lived in the middle east, but I don't. I also find christians to be as much, if not more so violent as an ismlamist groups. Christians are just better financed so they drop bombs instead of blowing themselves up.And the fundamentalist, misogynist and violent branches of islam are the most dangerous of all...
Oh..yah, above quotes from JimC.
