Hiroshima - 65 years
Re: Hiroshima - 65 years
The US can't disarm, nukes put the world at a stand-still. A country without nukes, or without the support of another nation's unclear arsenal, is hostage to the world. The US will disarm when it's nukes are no longer necessary.
Secondly, the US has not been constantly at war since it was created.
Thirdly, mistermack, the Emperor was contemplating surrender but there was a 'mini revolution' to overrule him by some of the lead generals.
Finally, The US is no more likely to drop a nuke than marry Russia. Unlike Suddam, the US leadership has a self-preservation instinct and knows when to give up.

Mine was a bit of hyperbole, really. Since we hear talk over the decades from the US about developing different nuke technology - including updating their entire aging arsenal - it's galling and hypocritical that they get all up in arms when anyone else talks in a similar vein - and even moreso when they don't and the US lies they are (or that they are actually developing WMD). They could start leading by example and do everything to minimize arsenals and the technology in general and in my opinion, cease the hypocrisy of talking about improving theirs while whining (and more) about others doing the same. The Mad Hatter wrote:The US can't disarm, nukes put the world at a stand-still. I'd suggest there was a bit of hyperbole in that, too... But close enuff to make a valid point, for my money...The Mad Hatter wrote:Secondly, the US has not been constantly at war since it was created.

Assertions are cheap - yours is as credible as Gawd's IMHO. And I certainly have no faith in the validity of yours given their power structure - get another Pres who talks to God and you can't possibly predict what gets dropped, or not. We've only got one country that's even dropped, and they did it twice (the second before they could possibly have assessed that the first wasn't effective... I'd think it would have been, or alternatively, a second on an unpopulated area would have worked). Where are you from please, Hatter? The Mad Hatter wrote:Finally, The US is no more likely to drop a nuke than marry Russia. Yah, the US won't disarm, which, in turn, makes any US talk about other countries nukes moot. On you're second point, you are wrong, the US has been at war constantly since the end of ww2. Finally, regardless of any "opinions" the US is the only country to have ever used "the bomb" and they continue to use uranium-tipped shells. The Mad Hatter wrote:The US can't disarm, nukes put the world at a stand-still. Our struggle is not against actual corrupt individuals, but against those in power in general, against their authority, against the global order and the ideological mystification which sustains it.

lawl.
I didn't know the US was created after World War II.
Secondly, talks aren't moot, but the US can't disarm while the fascists and dictators refuse to. Unlike it's Middle Eastern and European counterparts it has no real amibition for global domination by force of military. The US would much rather just flood the world with hamburger chains.
Finally, the US developed the first bomb, and deployed the first bomb against an actual target. Unlike other countries, however, they then didn't see the destructive capabilities and decide starting their own weapons program was a good idea because, hey, everybody needs one.

So it's circular, the US can't disarm because the "fascists (who?) and dictators" continue to proliferate, but they continue to proliferate because the US is already armed. The Mad Hatter wrote:Secondly, talks aren't moot, but the US can't disarm while the fascists and dictators refuse to.

Secondly, they don't proliferate because the US is armed, they proliferate because people who want to be powerful will always want the things that go boom.
