I normally don't spend a lot of time worrying about what the people around me choose to drive (or not to drive), but every once in a while I see some behavior that I find excessively annoying... like that one woman who, every year on Halloween, drives her 2 kids around trick-or-treating in a big Expedition/Suburban sized SUV. In our suburban neighborhood where the houses aren't exactly widely spaced, she'll pull up to a house and let the kids jump out and run up to do their thing while she idles on the street. Then the kids will get back into the SUV, covering about the same distance it would take to walk to the next house; she'll pull forward and repeat the process.

On a serious note, does anyone know the per mile cost of charging the Volt's battery?

I really do, as I mentioned in the OP, like the idea of electric cars. They offer a lot of potential speed and acceleration. Plus, they're quiet, and I believe they would be more reliable because there would be fewer parts.

The problem that I see is that you can't go very far on the battery - 40 miles is jack squat. And, it takes hours to recharge. So, people will wind up tooling around on the gas engine in the thing anyway. They need a 300-400 mile battery and capacitor technology to allow fast charging.

In addition, there is the question of cost. I would like to know what the Volt would cost me per mile. It would be nice to have a commuter car I could go back and forth to work with, but if it costs $3.00 a mile, then no thanks.

That will also become a long term issue. If we stop buying gasoline in large numbers and start tapping into the electrical grid, then the demand for electricity will raise the price (naturally) of electricity. It has to, or people will just overload the grid. We need more electrical power generation capacity.

It doesn't make any sense to use coal or oil power plants, because you lose like 70% of the energy in burning the fossil fuel, converting it to electrical power and then transporting it over miles of power lines. It would be better for the environment just to burn gasoline in the car. We need nuclear. Without it, we can't generate enough electricity for this to work. It's just not feasible.
