Secrecy is often required to maintain successful military operations. For example, in WW2 we had classified information about the cracking of the German Enigma machine, and if the info got out that the Brits had cracked it, then that would have been a terrible thing that cost many lives. Similarly, in the lead-up to D-Day, there was a decoy force created (with inflatable tanks and such) in Calais. Had someone squawked or the NYTimes published that information, we may well have not been able to successfully pull off the Normandy Invasion.

Here we are faced with 92,000 pages of documents that were "leaked." I don't know what the vast majority of documents contain, but I find it very unlikely that the NYTimes or anyone else has poured over the 92,000 pages and scoured them for the important stuff vs. the stuff that probably would be o.k. to make public. In other words, it seems to me overwhelmingly likely that nobody bothered to check to see if there is any information in there that would be more like Enigma or Calais information rather than mere stats on civilian deaths or other "embarrassing" information.

It seems a tad irresponsible.

Not necessarily. I don't think a person's medical confidentiality should be breached for curiosity's sake, for example. However, in this case I see no reason why we shouldn't have this information.

No I didn't. I said that the argument that people will die because of this is spurious when people are dying anyway. Openness is always a restraint on government, and I am quite certain that, in UK at least, the body count would be far less had we had the facts. Truth is that we would never have gone to war.

And the notion that the public can;t handle information is preposterous. 1 million people protested the Iraq war. were they right or government? Gordon Brown tried to deny the public access to MPs expense records.. Who was right?
