I asked her if she was aware that the 2 founders of spiritualism had announced that they had made it all up but it was too late to stop the cash-cow of the church they had started.
I talked to her about cold-reading, lack of repeatable evidence, and other techniques used by 'psychics' and the fact that at the church people knew lots of personal details about each other. I talked to her about credulity and that people who believed in X often believed in A-Q as well. I talked about horoscopes and Randi etc.

In the end she said to me- "But- HOW could the preacher possibly have known that I have blue in my wallpaper?"
You handed her the tools (skepticism, working explanations and ideas) and yet she still wanted you to work it out for her? Lazy. I'd mention that to her, I think.

Dude, I wasn't even TRYING to set up the questions...I was asking to get an idea which type of nonsense he believed (JW, SA etc) when the subject rather quickly turned to homosexuality.

I simply asked reasonable questions about it and he was more than happy to raise his voice righteously...til he saw who was watching.

But if I WAS trying to, that would make a doozy!

I sometimes like asking them if they want to be a righteous man - just like Lot. Now I have TWO praggling questions.

We get some preachers at my uni in the spring and summer, the atheist group I am a part of, the pagan group and the gay straight alliance get together and preach back at them. Most recently we had people dressed at pirates preaching FSM, a guy dressed up as a gorilla preaching evolution, superman, Harry Potter, the invisible pink unicorn, and gays and lesbians making out. FSM won with Harry Potter in a close second.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

Its really fun. After a while the real preachers just give up.

And go home, dejected, with eyes sad and downcast. Nobody takes them seriously and treats them like a joke.

I would almost feel bad for them if they weren't bringing their small children with them to hold signs that say stuff like fags are gong to hell.

Some may in fact go home with the buzz of being a martyr for god's cause, albeit in a somewhat safer way than martyrs in ancient Rome...

I was thinking about Christians and Rome the other day when I reading a Toontown post. Does anybody remember the name they gave to coating someone in tar and using them as a torch to light their parties? Google has failed me. :(
