Child beauty pageants.

Post by floppit » Wed Jul 21, 2010 3:44 pm

I find these repulsive, utterly skim squirmingly yuck.

I think with things like the above, ones where my initial emotional reaction is so strong I find it harder to get the rational side of my brain into gear and mount an argument that goes beyond 'FFS it's a no brainer'. They've started them in the UK, have done for a while now and I find it so sad such an abomination can spread so easily. To me it ranks as highly as religious indoctrination.

:ani: Is the easy bit, it's getting it into a sound argument with some sense of clear lines that gets harder but ultimately more important.

It's disgustingly horrific at best.

Little Miss Sunshine is the perfect satire of this whole thing.
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

You just know the type of woman the kid is likely to grow up into - unless she rebels big time. Look at the kid's nails.

It's the sexualising/'adultification' of children, not to mention teaching them to value the cheap and tawdry. Sounds :ani: to me!

I agree bloody dreadful, we are starting get this crap in the UK. Proms for 10 year olds. :banghead:
“I wish no harm to any human being, but I, as one man, am going to exercise my freedom of speech. No human being on the face of the earth, no government is going to take from me my right to speak, my right to protest against wrong, my right to do everything that is for the benefit of mankind. I am not here, then, as the accused; I am here as the accuser of capitalism dripping with blood from head to foot.”

John Maclean (Scottish socialist) speech from the Dock 1918.

The sexualising and adultification are obvious but one could argue all kids dress up in adult clothes - christ even action munchkin was trying to talk me into buying her play heels! I'm not sure a lack of good taste is meaningful.

Don't get me wrong, for all I'll play devil's advocate I loathe that stuff - so much so I think the emotion squashes out what would be good reasons and should be easy to articulate.

If who want to - the kids or the parents?

Parents rights vis a vis kids is a very dodgy area IMO.

Dodgy or difficult? I think it's the latter, there'll always be some boundaries therefore where they lie needs talking about by someone somewhere.

I wonder if some of the difficulty is the presence of emotion.

I disagree that the parents should have that right, but I'll accept that maybe outlawing that crap would set a society down a slippery slope.

I wouldn't allow any parent who would do such a thing anywhere near any child if I could help it.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
