US Justice Dep't Drops Racial Intimidation Case

Post by Coito ergo sum » Tue Jul 13, 2010 12:14 pm

Gonna kill some cracker babies! Drop those cracker whores!

You want freedom? You gunna haveta keel some crackas!
President Obama's Justice Department continues to stonewall inquiries about why it dropped a voter intimidation case against the New Black Panther Party.

The episode—which Bartle Bull, a former civil rights lawyer and publisher of the left-wing Village Voice, calls "the most blatant form of voter intimidation I've ever seen"—began on Election Day 2008. Mr. Bull and others witnessed two Black Panthers in paramilitary garb at a polling place near downtown Philadelphia. (Some of this behavior is on YouTube.)

One of them, they say, brandished a nightstick at the entrance and pointed it at voters and both made racial threats. Mr. Bull says he heard one yell "You are about to be ruled by the black man, cracker!"

In the first week of January, the Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit against the New Black Panther Party and three of its members, saying they violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act by scaring voters with the weapon, uniforms and racial slurs. In March, Mr. Bull submitted an affidavit at Justice's request to support its lawsuit.

When none of the defendants filed any response to the complaint or appeared in federal district court in Philadelphia to answer the suit, it appeared almost certain Justice would have prevailed by default. Instead, the department in May suddenly allowed the party and two of the three defendants to walk away. Against the third defendant, Minister King Samir Shabazz, it sought only an injunction barring him from displaying a weapon within 100 feet of a Philadelphia polling place for the next three years—action that's already illegal under existing law.

That deserves a great big -- WTF?

Come on, Holder! Dropping a case where the defendants didn't even respond or appear? They thumb their nose at the justice system, and you drop the charges?

Weird.

And now for the rest of the story...
During the 2008 presidential election, poll watchers found two New Black Panther militia members outside of a polling place in Philadelphia.[19] One of these two was a poll watcher, while the other was a New Black Panther member who had brought a nightstick. Republican poll watcher Chris Hill stated that voters had been complaining about intimidation, while the District Attorney's office stated that they had not been contacted by any voters.[20]

The New Black Panther with the nightstick was escorted away by the police.[21][22]

On January 7, 2009, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a civil suit against the New Black Panther Party and three of its members relating to the incident that occurred at the Philadelphia polling place during the 2008 election. The suit seeks an injunction preventing further violations of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The suit accuses members Minister King Samir Shabazz and Jerry Jackson of being outside a polling location wearing the uniform of the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, and that Shabazz repeatedly brandished a police-style baton weapon.[23] But the Bush Administration DOJ, having obtained an injunction against the defendant who had carried the weapon, dropped the suit against the remaining defendants, against the advice of its prosecutors who had worked on the case.

So we have here yet another story where a few carefully chosen factoids imply a deep conspiracy, but the full array of facts show the opposite to have been true: no evidence to suggest a conspiracy, no white voters claiming to have been intimidated, case downgraded by the Bush department, usual procedure regarding such cases followed, allegations made by one very political source, and so forth.

But what a perfect story. First Acorn, now the Panthers. Are there really still people out there trying to insist that race has nothing to do with why the right hates Obama? And do we really still have to pretend that this is the case because white tea partiers swear up and down it's not about his race?

They need to think up a better insult. "Cracker" just sounds too nice. I mean, doesn't everybody love crackers? Especially with cheese

Anyway, Jesus, can't we all just get along? Why so much hate? When are we gonna get past this? :(
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

I do believe you just prison raped him.
