State sanctioned indoctrination of children.

Post by Pappa » Thu Jul 01, 2010 7:19 pm

The very reason I signed up to RDF all that time ago was because my son's school were force feeding him religious bullshit. I quickly discovered they are obliged to by law.

Anyway, as time has gone on, Felix (my son) has grown a skin impervious to any and all forms of religious indoctrination. We also have a quiet agreement that I'll give him money if he politely undermines a visiting minister enough.

Today, he had an assembly with this minister ("Gary", probably a paedo - ginger too :what:). The minister was telling them all about Noah. Felix asked a question:
Felix wrote:Is that the one where god murdered all those people?
Felix wrote:He killed them for a reason. Because they didn't have faith, he washed over them with justice.
:wtf:

Later, Felix asked him, "Does that mean we're all related from Noah?".

'Gary' said he didn't know. :hehe:

interestingly, 'Gary' also asked the class if any of them go to church. Only one girl (in a class of 29) raised her hand.

Smart kid, just like his dad.

Offspring #1 occasionally comes home looking glum, and saying, "They were talking about Jesus again. I'm sick of hearing about Jesus."

And that's with no prompting from me, other than some explanations about what some people believe.

I'm not sure that's entirely true, unless Wales is different to England. Here, the only obligation is a period of what they call "a daily act of collective worship", usually morning assembly. Although RE has to be taught, it's supposed to be "cross-denominational" (except in faith schools), and a parent has the legal right to withdraw the child from these classes. I'd suggest in Felix's case, though, that he's better off staying in, as a "secret weapon" for us! :funny:

Excellent! that's real progress! And Felix, of course, is a great kid!

I know I could remove him, but I figured it's better for him to stay with the other kids (and be a secret agent too).

Regarding the daily act of worship, I think his school gets round the necessity to give a "broadly christian" assembly by inviting visiting ministers to do it for them quite often. Although it's a standard state school, they do seem much more on the pro-religion side of the spectrum. I'd make a fuss, but it's hardly worth it the hassle. I have a feeling the head wouldn't understand why anyone would have issue with it. In all other respects it's an excellent school.
