I always have my status hidden when I'm playing a game, no matter what my role. Scum also watch for that, looking for signs of specials. When I'm vanilla town, I don't want to eliminate myself from scum consideration as a possible special because they might night kill me instead of a real special. When I'm a special, I don't want to leave around extra hints. The same issues pertain when I'm a scum or indie.

In large or complex games there are often roles that are neither town nor scum. They have independent win conditions. The roles are usually called "indie" or "indy".colubridae wrote:Ok. errr what's indie?oblivion wrote:some people think it's a scum tell.colubridae wrote:I never logon 'hidden'. How important is it?

Examples:
Serial Killer - depending on the game, may need to survive until another side wins, or be the last person standing.
Survivor - can win with another side as long as they are still alive
Jester - must be lynched on a particular day. Usually this is day 1, but sometimes it varies.
There are other variations - sometimes the indie must find another player (via night view) before that player is lynched or night killed, for instance.

Many thanks. How do you decide who is what?

When I design a regular game, I pick out the sorts of roles that I want the game to have, then adjust up or down based on how many people sign up. Once sign-up is closed, I assign the roles randomly.

Re: Simple 3 Peanuts
It's tricky. The GM wants a balanced game where all sides including indies have a decent chance to win. So you have to consider balance when choosing roles. Some town roles have a negative impact on town for that reason, such as the miller role, as well as some other less well known roles. Indie roles usually act as balancers, and they can be a lot of fun to play. But, it's hard to design an indie role with a good chance of winning. I think 3 indies have met their win conditions in the games I've GMed. And I think about 6 indies lost. The winners were in some of my recent games, though. I think I've gotten a better feel for how to make a viable indie role.colubridae wrote:Interesting
In two of my favorite games I've ever played, I was an indie.

I need to adjust the ending of Day 3 because I'll be at a uni orientation thingie for about 14 hours tomorrow.
I can either end the game day 5 hours early and start the next day at the regular time (7 AM BST Wednesday) or end the game day 10-12 hours late and start the next day at the regular time (7 PM BST Wednesday).
Let me know what you would prefer. I'm leaning toward shortening Day 3, but only if it doesn't penalize some time zones.
