One Man and His Dog

Post by Pappa » Tue Jun 08, 2010 9:45 am

For those who don't know, One Man and His Dog is an annual televised sheepdog trial in the UK. It's been on our screens since the 70s.

I have no idea why, but I've always been completely fascinated by it. If I ever catch it on, I'll always watch it. I've never been to a live trial unfortunately, but it's something I'd love to do.

Anyone else got a soft spot for this stuff?

This should perhaps be in NSWF?

I can hear the music already, and I haven't even played the video yet.

Actually, Pappa, they have these things at country shows in Oz; I've seen a few, and they're fascinating. I also used to love watching Bron's dad with his dogs, many years ago now when he was alive and active on his farm...

I think part of the fascination for me started when I read a book about the transition of humans from hunting to farming. This kind of pastoralism is a bridge between the two that has stuck around until today. It's a practice that will have hardly changed for thousands of years.

It reminds me of Sunday afternoons/early evenings back in the Dark Ages, with nothing to watch on the TV. It was either OMAHD or Little House on the Prairie.

Brilliant thread, Pappa!

I instantly felt the need for a cup of tea and a fistful of hob nobs.

I bought "30 Years of One Man and His Dog" on DVD for £6.99 on Amazon yesterday. Bargain.
