NYC bomb suspect seized aboard Dubai-bound plane
May 4 12:17 PM US/Eastern
By TOM HAYS and COLLEEN LONG

NEW YORK (AP) - A Pakistani-born U.S. citizen was hauled off a plane about to fly to the Middle East and arrested in the failed attempt to explode a bomb-laden SUV in Times Square, authorities said Tuesday. One official said he claimed to have acted alone.
Faisal Shahzad was on board a Dubai-bound flight that was taxiing away from the gate at Kennedy Airport when the plane was stopped and FBI agents and New York Police Department detectives took him into custody late Monday, law enforcement officials said.

Can you be put to death for attempted murder?

Also, what's with the "scumbag"? Aren't you innocent until proven guilty in America?

Yeah, maybe he just has poor verbal skills and was trying to express himself creatively. :lay:

Apparently there's no death penalty in New York.

From Wikipedia:
People v. LaValle, 3 N.Y.3d 88 (2004), was a landmark decision by the New York Court of Appeals, the highest court in the U.S. state of New York, in which the court ruled that the state's death penalty statute was unconstitutional because of the statute's direction on how the jury was to be instructed in case of deadlock. New York has since been without the death penalty, as the law has not been amended.

Yes, but that's in a court of law. In the court of public opinion, we can still call OJ Simpson a scumbag even though he was acquitted of murder.

This would not be under State jurisdiction, but rather it would be federal prosecution under federal anti-terrorism laws. The federal government retains the death penalty for such non-murder offenses as treason, espionage and crimes under military jurisdiction.

It's possible this could be brought as a treason violation, since the fuckwad is a naturalized American citizen. Traitorous bastard!

Really? I always thought you were the kind of person who based belief on evidence. I guess I was wrong.

Due process? Also since he's a citizen, doesn't he have those pesky "right" things?

Like I said, "if convicted..."

Of course he has rights. He was arrested and has a right to an attorney, the right to remain silent, the right to confront the witnesses against him, etc. If he's convicted, hang the son of a bitch.

I do base belief on evidence. In the OJ trial, the jury did not base their belief on evidence, in my opinion. We're allowed to question the verdict of the jury.

Further, just because someone is acquitted of a particular crime charged, doesn't mean he's not a scumbag. It also doesn't mean he didn't do it.

OJ was acquitted of murder in criminal court, but when they sued him civilly for money damages for wrongful death, OJ was found responsible and liable for the deaths of Brown and Goldman. So, if the jury in the civil trial can hold an opinion contrary to the jury in the criminal trial, why can't I? Why can't I agree with the jury in the civil trial? Because the criminal trial occurred first?

What point are you making here? That our opinions are shackled to what a jury says? Which jury?

Are you suggesting that we can't form an opinion until a jury rules on something, and then we are bound to agree with their decision? Where do you get that?

"You have the right to remain silent. Use it. You the right to bleed on the cell floor. Your call on that. You have the right to sing the blues. Stay on key, please. You have the right to basic cable. No premiums. You have the right to public defender. Either just out of law school or an alcoholic that couldn't keep a practice. You get to pick, of course. Anything you say will be taken down, twisted around and used against you in a farce of law. Do you have anything to add before being given a fair trial, found guilty and executed pending an appeal of your case?"

Okay, that's Miranda covered.
