Re: Sikh kids should carry knives in school
Sikh mother packs the little Sikh kiddies off on their merry way to skool, making sure they have their sarnies, a clean uniform, and not forgetting their honourable Kirpan. Dishonour without it.
Bully kicks off in PE class and gets sent back to the changing room, steals said knife. Later a child is found bleeding to death in the locker room..
Not the fault of the Sikh, naturally.

Yes, that's what he said. So, the question is: Where is the evidence for that claim?Jörmungandr wrote:Fair enough, though saying that in response to a post talking about carrying a knife for defensive purposes gives the impression that he was saying that carrying a knife will put you at higher risk for being stabbed.Seraph wrote: Dagda said nothing about correlation or causation. I've heard similar claims being made about people who keep fire arms (they are more likely to be shot themselves), and I have found studies supporting them statistically, but right now I can't be arsed hunting them down again.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould
Re: Sikh kids should carry knives in school
in that case there is no disagreement, the statistic only refers to people who carry them for self defence in public. Not Samurai Warriors or Carpenters.Jörmungandr wrote:There's no doubt that there is a correlation between people who carry a knife and people who get stabbed. However, that is not to say that carrying a life makes you inherently more likely to get stabbed. What causes these people to be more likely to be stabbed is their behavior. If I carry a knife around all day because I use it for work, the odds of me being stabbed are no higher than they would be if I wasn't carrying it. If anything, they're lower, since now I at least have the knife to defend myself with should the need arise through no fault of my own. However, if I'm a member of a violent gang with lots of enemies, and I'm engaging in their activities, my odds of getting stabbed are quite high. I'd probably be very likely to also be carrying a knife, but if I get into a fight with rival gang members I'll likely be stabbed whether or not I remembered to bring my knife with me that afternoon. The Dagda wrote:Well that's true but if you're an idiot who lives in that environment and needs to carry a knife the causation is your idiocy and the stupidity your death. Don't get into a culture that carries knives and you probably wont get stabbed, although no one can promise that, some people are just unlucky. Shit happens and then you die. The majority of knife crime happens amongst criminals or those of a recidivist nature, who can say what causes that?Jörmungandr wrote:The Dagda wrote:

Correlation ≠ causation. The act of carrying a knife does not magically make one more likely to be stabbed.
Are you trying to say there is no correlation or causation because I think that is erroneous nonsense.

I think the kids of gangstaz and rappers should be allowed to carry guns to school.

Freck race card... I'm founding my own religion that requires that I should always be armed to fight injustice and will cry foul if I am bothered about my hardware.Deep Sea Isopod wrote:
Sikhs should be allowed to wear their ceremonial daggers - known as Kirpans - to school and other public places, Britain's first Asian judge has said.Bullshit! He's playing the race card. The school was found guilty of indirect discrimination under race relations and equality laws.
This is NOT discrimination, because ALL of the kids are banned from carrying knives.
In most religions/traditions, where personal safety may be at risk, exeptions to the "rules" can be applied.
Seriously, I do feel that Sikh should be allowed to fulfill their ritual requirements unbothered, and that in the spirit of equality, everybody be allowed to wear swords freely.

Except of course EVERY Scot (including long lost offshoots like me) should be able to wear both dirk and Scian Dubh... the problem is not groups demanding privileges, it's the oppression of the population at large that is felt more acutely by someDeep Sea Isopod wrote:The Scots are not allowed to wear a Skean Dhu, neither.
