Why? Seems to be a perfectly legitimate way to help out a children's hospital?Gawdzilla wrote:I'm so disappointed in this guy.

I think St. Judes is a pretty secular hospital. It is a great place to donate money, and Sully never mentioned god when he was interviewed after landing the plane.CJ wrote:GoodGawdzilla wrote:I was taking the piss, CJ.CJ wrote:Why? When I watched the video I was waiting for there to be some sort of 'praise the Lard' outburst at the end.

I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked

Ditto on St. Judes. If they treated animals as well they'd be nearly perfect.Pluto2 wrote:I think St. Judes is a pretty secular hospital. It is a great place to donate money, and Sully never mentioned god when he was interviewed after landing the plane.

I was pleased that there wasn't much "miracle" about that event. People knew damn good and well it was skill and a great crew that made it happen.

There is the small matter of the name of the hospital, however. Saint Jude's!Gawdzilla wrote:Ditto on St. Judes. A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

Can't have everything. At least not yet. Besides, I've started xlating "saint" into "didn't get caught doing the dirty".Xamonas Chegwé wrote:There is the small matter of the name of the hospital, however. I don't care if they change the name to Pope Ratzinger as long as they do the work.
Same with the Red cross or Christian aid
It would be nice to have all these charities secular organisations but if Xians need to be reminded of their faith so these causes get money I'm all for it .
When I was at school some Evangelists were invited around to do their thing (you know happy faces little song and dance ,thinly veiled preaching ).
the think that most upset me at the time was their Song "It don't mean a thing ,if it's not done for him!" in which they explained that good works were worthless if they were done by the 'unsaved' ......( I think it was the Biology teacher who took me to the pub that day so I could calm down :pissed:)
If an Atheist, even a famous one like RD or Hitchens made a big donation to that hospital do you think they would refuse the money ?
Lots of hospitals are called after saints ....Renaming them would be counter productive .

Katie Couric asked him if he prayed at any point and he said:CJ wrote:Good man!Pluto2 wrote:I think St. Judes is a pretty secular hospital. It is a great place to donate money, and Sully never mentioned god when he was interviewed after landing the plane.
He didn't even for a second say that he did just because it was the answer that people would expect. Whatever the man's religious beliefs or lack thereof, he was willing to go on national television and say that in the middle of a crisis he did not pray.Sully wrote: I would imagine somebody in back was taking care of that for me while I was flying the airplane.
My focus at that point was so intensely on the landing. I thought of nothing else.
I think it's great that he's trying to help sick children.
'Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man -- living in the sky -- who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do.. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! ..But He loves you.' - George Carlin
Re: Captain Sully cashes in on his fame.
I don't see why the absence of prayer is at all relevant. You'd have thought that this lot was more impressed by him not praying than landing the plane.
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

It's not that he didn't actually pray while landing the plane, because really, that controlled crash and saving all of those people's lives is the most amazing thing I've ever seen a commercial pilot do.born-again-atheist wrote:I don't see why the absence of prayer is at all relevant. It's that he didn't feel a need to tell every reporter he could that god helped him through it or spend all his on-camera time thanking god, since it's pretty much expected in the US that if you survive a tragedy you have to blather about god to the reporters. Regardless of whether they prayed at the time, most people are going to tell Katie Couric that god had something to do with it after the fact. Sully didn't, and I think that deserves notice.
