What characteristics should an honorable man have?

The title says it all. And yes, I am talking about men.

Forbearance, for starters. (And we need to kill all those who don't have it.)

Kidding aside, off the top of me head, I'd go with forbearance, then scrupulous honesty, followed closely by good judgement on when to relax the bit about honesty out of consideration for others. Then, patience. With those, you should be able to develop deep insight and compassion. On a more mundane level, I respect men who are quiet, affable, courteous and well-read.

Courage. When Winston Churchill was asked what characteristic he held to be most important in a person he replied 'courage'. When asked why he replied 'How can you trust a coward?'

He should be truthful. He should be respectful, compassionate and care for the feelings of others. What CJ points out is an important characteristic - he should have courage, the courage to do what's right in the face of adversity.

He also makes sure his partner is sexually satisfied, and puts the toilet seat down.

I like this one  There are a lot of things that can be added if we are talking about what makes a like-able man, or a good friend, but if you are just talking about honorable then that is a good summary, but yes I would add courage as well.

An honorable man is someone who offends you because he says exactly what he thinks. Everything else is fluff.

I started to add courage, but I chickened out at the last second. :pardon:

This seems most important to me, too. I have known excellent, honorable men who are crappy at compassion, but a coward will pretend compassion so they can fit in.

Exactly the same as an honourable Woman, or an honourable Intersexed-person, or any other honourable adult member of the human species. :dono:

From the OP ... totally biased .... using the word honourable leads us to say courage or bravery .

Well I think Courage and Bravery are over rated and Ill defined (and quite often get other people hurt ).

I like to think were I in a situation that called for Honour bravery and courage that I could summon some from somewhere ... but the concept of virtue (original meaning, not the new mamby pamby version) leaves me cold.

:leave: exit stage left to faint sarcastic echoes of "Braveheart !!!!!"
