In defence of Putin I must say that if he really had a hand in this crash he displays an advanced sense of irony. The polish president was on his way to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre. About 22,000 of the Polish elite were killed on Stalin's order, and five year old trees were planted over the top of the mass graves to obscure the event.

Originally I was going to say exactly that, but in this context it seemed too macabre, even by my own standards.

The planting of the five year old trees, by the way, was meant to point the finger at the Germans in the event that the graves were discovered. Dendrochronological forensics, however, made it obvious that those trees had been imported from elsewhere.

We are a cynical lot, my first thought on seeing that story earlier was that Russia had just decapitated the Polish Government.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.
